Re: new site
I'd get the domains at the same place. The host will usually "redirect" from one domain name to the other for you or you can usually use a control panel to set it up.
Edit: You need to purchase different domains but ONLY one hosting package. |

Re: new site
Hey Steve,
feel free to copy, paste, redirect, use and abuse the stuff on my posts... As Linda said: "The host will usually "redirect" from one domain name to the other for you or you can usually use a control panel to set it up" Some hosts call it "domain alias", others call it "domain redirection". In that case, you'd only need one web-space and your scripts would simply have to check that the website is being access via the right domain. If you can't set that up, you'll need separate webspaces to host the scripts... But if this is the case, they're not a good hosting company... I thouroughly recommend CS New Media. very affordable hosting, domain aliases (withthe right package) and the best support I've ever come across...

Re: new site
hi ,
Taken your advise Diego, and purchased another domain name as mentioned earlier, they are now sat on the same server/Host in the uk. So the new web site needs to be set up under new domain name and when someone has clicked on other domain name they are directed to new domain name ?, please let me get this right lol |

Re: new site
Diego,
brill got my head around it, thanyou. Next question to throw in the mix. layout, i am being asked what sort of layout, can i throw this to you all. its a family run plumbing & drainage business in southampton. Steve |

Re: new site
I'd suggest something simple that people will be familioar with. You may have people who are not very web literate using your site so its better to cater to all. A nice 2 column layout with a slim left or right sidebar and a larger main content area would work well here. You would also have a nice header, something attractive but that instantly highlights you as not only a plumbing & drainage business but a professional one. So no tacky graphics or anything like that. A nice navigation bar underneath this header would be good too. The sidebar and main content would come underneath the header and nav (I've no idea why I reeled them off in the wrong order I just did).
The main content area will hold the bulk of any information with the sidebar containing extra info or navigation. Testimonials, special offers, special services, quick contact info could go here. As goes layout, the world is your oyster. You could go with something tried or tested or something unconventional. I find that non-tech business sites are best following the rules a little so as not to alienate any potential customers, so a two or three column layout would be ideal, in my opinion. Pete. |

Re: new site
Diego Hi and everyone else I dont think i am getting full support from host and they want more and more coin for everything and anything they do ,
Facts . business I hope you are all aware , if not a brief is in order. small family business plumber will be non exsistant soon if we do not act, for those not living in the uk , all the big companyieis are selling insurances which cover plumbing, heating ect and it is the corparate companies that get the work, which leaves the one man plumber in a town out of work, so to try to establish a footing on the net I need a good site which is being built as we speak, I have an issue with trust and i dont think the site will be brilliant but i have content control so i should be able to swap out text and images. The company is called All Clear Ltd and I operate in and around the Southampton area (plumbing & drainage services) so I have a domain name of allclearltd.com. I have spent on yellow pages, yell.com and 118.com and the phone remains quiet, i can only think its to late for me ? right so this could be the way forward, I have purchased a domain name plumbing-drainage-southampton.com and is sat on the same server/host in the uk , Diego has mentioned i need the script to point to url friendly domain which is where the new site will be and when ever some clicks on allclearltd there sent to again url friendly site. I really appritiate your time honest |

Re: new site
Hi Steve,
Bad news: I don't have much experience in business and I definitelly don't know much about management, but I do know about marketing and I can tell you this: any money you spent on yellow pages and 118 (which was probably a lot) is not going to get you as much return as you would have had from Google Adwords (pay-per-click). I'm saying this from experience, I've worked with people who spent thousands on Yellow pages/Yell.com and had no return what-so-ever from it. In pay-per-click, you pay for every visitor you get so you know exactly what you'll get for your money. Goods news: - A Google search for plumber southampton has only 600,000 results (that's not much, believe me). - Most of the top results are directories, not in direct competition with you Your market is specific enough that you'll be able to get your foot in it and increase your exposure long-term without spending a penny. How? a) A well-built website, which you're already doing. b) Submit yourself to (free) quality web-directories - I strongly recommend freeindex.co.uk. c) Start a pay-per-click campaign (when your site is ready) that fits your budget. You can spend as much or as little as you can afford. Google Adsense is your best option (as pay-per-click goes) because it's the biggest search engine so your ads will reach a bigger slice of the market. I feel for you and understand how hard it is to compete against insurance companies/corporates, but I think there's an increasing trend to 'cut out the middle man' and you have a very good chance of increasing your business if you establish yourself on the web and in search engine results. Cheers, Diego A.

Re: new site
Hi Diego,
spot on, I have set up with freeindex and web site about a week away, I only hope the code is good for the search engines. I will need the scripting from one url to other can you help with this, indeed anyone who thinks they have a good idea I would clearly listern. SEO has got to be priority? email ? did we say nothing has to be changed ? Do you think it might be an idea to show you code of web page when i get it, and see what you think ? thanx again Diego and all. Steve |

Re: new site
Code: No need to send me anything. Just let us know when the site is up and running and we'll take a look...
Email: if it's working (eg.: steve@allclearltd.com) then there's no need to change anything

Re: new site
hi,
I have just written to web designer as i am a little fed up with his behaviour. I have lost my deposit and 3 weeks. I am a little disheartened by some , as i must state now everyone here is ok . there must be a way for a designer to build a site for me then get paid. If I get no reply I clearly have to find an alternative, oh for me to build a site to long a load of rubbish, and I will fail. Im sure you girls and guys do a great job and provide a fab service , but as spinal said, there are a few wanabes that will rip you of, whyn do i find these people. steve, totally fed up . good night |
