Depends on you,,
which is easier for you to learn, personally, the only server site language i know how to use php ( very minimal ) so as you can imagine, that is what i would recommend, others will say asp
its just personal choice

I agree PHP is the way to go imo.
If that is what you choose then I would suggest downloading xampp.
It is bundled software comprising Apache, php, mysql and various other tools including phpmyadmin an easy tool for creating and managing mysql databases.

i'd reccomend php too, it's not overly complicated compared to some, and it gives you a great foundation once you've learnt it to moving onto other languages.
Mostly depends on what you want your site to be able to do?
Although i should imagine it will be accomplishable with php.

Re: Which server technology is best for a website
Well, seeing everybody is woohoo PHP, i say: learn ASP.Net too. more knowledge is always rewarding, no matter how you look at it. And if you get experienced and feel like you might just want to start working professionally as a webdeveloper, ASP.Net jobs are better paid. Both languages are free to learn. If you want to create something for use in windows, or specifically on IIS servers, go with ASP. If you rather Apache, go with PHP (or use the Mono mod for ASP.net). anyways, good luck!

Re: Which server technology is best for a website
I'm learning ASP.NET myself, not finding it to hard and I think it is a good place to start.
Note:I haven't looked at any others but as has already been stated ASP.NET web developement tends to pay a little more. (at least this is what I have found)

Re: Which server technology is best for a website
there is no harm in learning both asp and php, as you will find that differing clients want differing things.
to start, i would personally go with php, as it is slightly easier

Re: Which server technology is best for a website
php all the way.
I'd say it was one of the easiest to work with / learn and there is plenty of help out there when you need it.
