Site Popularity, what you think

Hey guys Matthew Bagley here from Paramiliar Design Studios.

I'm looking for some advice. Now over at Paramiliar I have developed a Site Popularity report which basicly is a report telling you how well your site is doing in popularity (of course we cant measure visitors or anything like that but it is fairly accurate!)

Now there has been talk of expanding it but there are two ideas.

1) Automate the system and allow visitors to signup to receive free weekly reports on both their website and upto 9 competitors

2) Generate the report for every page on the website thus allowing individual pages to be monitored.

Now we would love to do both but ideally we want to know what would be more usefull to website owners.

So if you could post some comments and feedback here it would be very much appreciated.

Re: Site Popularity, what you think

This has been done and to alarming levels of accuracy (read: silktide, alexa, et-al)...

All I will say is that you need to offer something the others dont and make it useful.... if you can do that, then arm yourself with a bank of web servers rigged in a farm because for either of those offerings you will need a lot of processor power and bandwidth for a reasonable level of success!

How do I know? Well, I myself have personally written such tools and I am no slack developer... even with optimisations these apps are hungry due to outbound calls for info and the levels of maths processing!

Just my $.02.

Good luck in your endeavours!

Thanks for the feedback Rob, the script has been tested with 20 websites being indexed at once and CPU never went above 25% which is a good sign that it should be stable.
