Re: are scrolling banners easy?

I don't get it. So like a marquee or something? Or like and advertising banner?

Could you elaborate a little, please?

Pete.

Re: are scrolling banners easy?

Hi,
Sorry not to get back before now, I've been away from the machine for a bit.
The idea is that it will be a 'newsflash' type horizontal bar containing text that scrolls across the screen (maybe banner isn't the right description). Sounds like marquee might do it - can I source the code anywhere and it is code that does not need anything in the hosting package such as scripting?
Cheers and thanks for the help.

Here's one done in html. Your code will not validate if you use this. http://www.yourhtmlsource.com/text/marquees.html

Hotscripts has several.. take a look at these.

Re: are scrolling banners easy?

Code: Select all
<marquee>text</marquee>
But I bet that wouldn't go down well with the validation monkeys.

You can find quite a lot on Google.
scrolling text css
scrolling text javascript
marquee css
marquee javascript
marquee
scrolling text

There has to be something within those results that would be suitable for the scrolling effect.

This monkey would go ape if you used a marquee. Does it absolutely have to scroll? Nobody likes them anyway. They're bad. Not many people know this but the devil actually created marquees. It's an interesting fact and another good reason not to use them.

Re: are scrolling banners easy?

Those days are gone now. I repented my sins, they told that was enough. Will I never live down my days of html abuse and *shudder* excessive use of obtrusive javascript?

I feel my shame inside me like a knife.

Yeah scroller things/ticker tapes are a bad idea I think. They are generally ugly in my opinion. The problem is some clients want things they have seen once, somewhere. More is better...

I think moving images are fine if they are part of the design, but when its information it should be easy to read and not distracting or annoying.

If it were me I would try to pursuade the client to look at another solution. Maybe a nice looking news item, you could maybe jazz it up a bit by using flash if you had too.

Re: are scrolling banners easy?

excellent info gang, some choices to go through, so cheers I'll have a think about it all.
I agree that moving elements, be they images or text, must be very cleverly designed and not just added because someone has the idea that their site needs it. What I am doing is bidding for the work on the basis of the brief, but will offer suggestions and alternatives in addition to that bid info.
Sounds like scrolling text shouldn't be a problem for me to quote for at least, so thanks again.
(and .....em.....how do these threads get from scrolling text to people being so tough on themselves........this is one heck of a forum at times!!!)
