webpage management

Hi,

I would just like some feedback on what I should do with this, I have a client I designed a website for about a year ago, she was paying me monthly for making changes to her site every month. But now she wants to be able to make the changes to her site herself, for example changing the text thats on all of the pages, adding and removing pictures etc.. The client does not know any HTML,css, javascript, php at all so I was wondering what could i do to make this possible ?

Thanks

Or write it yourself with php / mySQL. Not at all hard to write a small CMS.

thats what i was thinking, i have to read more about how CMS works. She just wants to be able to edit the text that shows on the site on the different pages, i was just going to make a table for each page and store the text in there and make a page for her to edit that text.

Does CMS use database also or does it edit the .html file directly ?

I guess ill just read more about it thanks.

Re: webpage management

Storing the content into a database is always the best way to go IMO.

Re: webpage management

In other words, your client wants to be a programmer! If they don't want to pay you to do it, and they want to do it themselves, then they are going to have to learn HTML and learn the server-side scripting language you used. Once they find out how big and time consuming that task is, you'll have your monthly job back!!!

Re: webpage management

I totally disagree with that Ralph! Clients don't have to learn HTML or CSS to make changes to their site. If you code the site properly, creating a simple CMS is the easiest thing in the world.

I do this for all my clients and not one them know a lick of HTML.

Re: webpage management

In case you are wondering what the hell a CMS is, A content management system provides the user with a graphical interface to edit their website, kinda like Microsoft Word!

Re: webpage management

for a user to use a proper CMS, they just need to know how to click on links and type, they don't need to know HTML. I would charge a little more for that , though, because a good one can be a lot of work.

And it doesn't use a database..

Re: webpage management

a professional one like that is mostly very good. Just don't pay too much. I'm sure that someone here would slap that off for less.

Plus, databases are nothing evil! I'd say they are better than storing all the data to separate files, because then you have to have totally open "777" files on your web server!

Re: webpage management

Cmon man, be a businessman. Just give the code to the client and tell him please, go and do the changes you want, no problem.

After a short while the client should be back and ready to pay you for the job. AND then you ask for more than before.

I know, but some hosters charge extra for database-access. I can imagine someone is not willing to pay extra for something that can also be stored in extra files. Specially on a small website..
