You want to create a what? Directory or other?
Hi All!
I am totally new to web site design/development and will be looking to hire someone to build a site (especially if it proves to be way too technical for me) but before I do that, I need to be able to tell the developer what I want so I come to you for definitions. :o)
I am looking to build a directory/database site that has functions very similar to employflorida.com (which is a job search engine for the state of Florida) but for a different subject. Here are a few things similar to what I want to create on my site which www.employflorida.com uses:
1) you can search by location, zip, county, or major city first, then more specific criteria -- like occupation, salary, etc--once you have made a selection (I would add a few more search options than this though) https://www.employflorida.com/saintr...sion=jobsearch
2) the site generates job leads from various job sites across the web and sorts/lists them by date, job title, employer, source, etc
3) clicking on the job title will provide a brief description of the job but a more detailed one can be accessed from the originating web site, posted at the bottom of the page.
****************************************
My main questions are:
A) There are many sites in existence that already sort their data in specific categories. How do I bring the data from all of those sites into my own and still utilize whatever methods they use to sort their information (e.g. date, time, location, etc)? Do I have to receive special permission or obtain specific database access?
B) I do not want to change or edit the data from the other sites in any way, just be a source/reference where one can access all of the other sites' information in one place. My plan is to list the information in brief on my site (with a source reference) and a person desiring more info can click on the subject link and be directed to the original site that lists the complete details.
C) What design/database tools or scripts do I need to utilize to make this happen?
Thanks any help/comments/info! [If you can help me "translate" what I'm looking for, it would be greatly appreciated.]
OB
