Re: My site

Power point?! No ... you need HTML and CSS to make a website

How about starting here:

Re: My site

Thanks karinne - those are good suggestions. I was thinking maybe I could use front page to make the website stand out. Also I am planing on having lots of links to pictures of naked ladies to attract more visiters. I hope people don't overlook the valuable content of my site because of this but I can't think of any other ideas, except maybe a video of a man getting bitten by a crocodile.

Re: My site

Don't use front page! Hand-code your site. Learn HTML. Learn CSS.

Re: My site

OK, I will try and learn these things. In your expirience do you find that you appear higher up on google searches if you have pictures of car crashes? How can I make my site stand out?

Re: My site

Not suitable? You weren't kidding either.

But yeah xhtml/css just as karinne said. I particularly recommend html dog, it was one of the resources used when I was picking up xhtml and css. It's very good. And will continue to be a good reference for even after you've learnt the basics.

But I gotta admit, if I am ever in any doubt about my markup I go straight to the w3c spec. It's a good read and you actually find a lot out by reading it. There's no bias, no personal opinions it's just a spec. It's amazing how much info that you find on blogs or in articles can be distorted. Best to read it for yourself and form your own opinions.

Good luck,

Pete.

Re: My site

Good lord! Google doesn't care for pictures. Google looks at your text. Google is not a person that sits behind a monitor and actually "looks" at website and determines which is the prettiest!

Google is a robot that goes around looking at your code and sniffs out headings (stuff between <h1>, <h2>, <h3, etc... tags). Stuff in bold also.

Don't put all you text in bold or on heading ... it's smart enough to look for that.

Re: My site

Thanks Pete, you are a very generous person. I will use your advice. I am thinking of investing in a server to host lan tournaments for Dune 2000, so I will need a good sound card.

Karinne - are you serious? So maybe I should spend more time putting my poetry (the main purpose of my site) on the site as opposed to pictures. I might start doing a pokemon blog as well - I've completed ruby and saphire.

Re: My site

What? Pictures of car crashes wouldn't do it. Being optimised for search engines and having accesible and relevant content is what will get you get results on google. But these things take time, often many months.

There are many ways to get publicity but shock marketing is not a good idea, it will cause high traffic for a small period and then a slump. Unless you keep the gore then people aren't going to want to come back. A great idea and a lot of perseverance is a far better philosophy if you want web success.

Pete.

No joke! Have a look at the Web Site Analysis - (SEO) - Search Engine Ranking Advice and Analysis and the ADVANCED Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) forums for more info.

Re: My site

Even if your site is image oriented, you can still optimise you site very well for the search engines. There are ways to put descriptions onto your images and site that a standard user would not necessarily have to see.

Don't worry too much. If flickr can get good search rankings, with it being a photo album site and all, the I'm sure it's possible. I'd be more concerned about getting a good quality site up and enjoying the process though, if I were you. If the quality is there you'll soon get a small but loyal following. If it's poor but ranks high on google you'll get a lot of one time visitors and no-one wants them.

Pete.
