What's going on here People!?!?!?

Right, over the past few days this forum has become increasingly hostile. I know that I have been guilty of the occasional snappy remark as of late also but this morning I had an epiphany.

As members of webforumz.com we are ALL here to help one another wherever and whenever possible. Weather this be encouraging eachother on good work or offering guidence. From now on I, for one, will be a lot more helpful when I can to prevent the forum decending into the kind of disorder that it has in the last few days.

If you feel the need to curse someone elses work or methods, make sure you can offer them guidence so they can improve what is lacking. Let's not just say "Your site is aweful and makes me want to vomit!"

In short; if someone's site is good, congratulate them on a job well done. If their site is bad, offer them constructive help. Don't beat them down with insults.

It works the same the other way as well. If you post a site up for critique, be willing to take any and all comments on board. If you just argue it's like asking a person for a drink, taking a sip and throwing it back in their face and saying "No! This isn't what I asked for!!!" It's ungreatful to say the least.

If you can't take critiscism then please don't post here as it will only lead to an arguement.

Cheers.

Dan..

A point I also made in the Cafe last night, before the post was subsequently removed early this morning.
I made no critiques yesterday because I couldn't be bothered to wade through all the rot to get to the real threads.

Yes indeed, bearing in mind Critique is an assessment, and people sometimes cant take criticism. And theres no point saying "looks good dude apart from that graphic issue" cos thats equally unhelpful.

Yes theres going to be some "tension" because people are criticising other peoples hard work, blood sweat and tears and probs something their proud of.. I suppose its a balancing act tbh, I was snappy yesterday and i apologise.

I think we could all do with abit of "gin and juice" not that this forums promotes drinking..

Re: What's going on here People!?!?!?

I appreciate your efforts here minute44, but I don't think this is a simple situation that can be resolved without getting to the root of why this stuff happens and dealing with those causes.

I'll start with one major issue that always gets me in trouble. When somebody comes on here and says "I am a web designer, please look at my web design site", I make, what I consider, a valid assumption that these people are able to take something and run with it. They shouldn't need a mile long post detailing out every aspect of their site because they are web designers... right? Well, when they come back and are completely at a loss to what CSS, XHTML and Web standards are and can't follow simple directions on fixing their site, then this just frustrates me. I just wasted my time trying to help a hack. At some point we have to ask... are you really a designer who should be selling services. I mean, here we are spending countless time doing everything for this guy so he can get paid for our time. I just have very little patience for people making extremely false claims about their abilities.

If someone was too look back at my responses, I am rarely if ever harsh with anyone who hasn't claimed to be a web designer. Web designers are expected to be on a much higher level then people creating their own business site or personal site. They should be able to take something like "Ditch the tables and look in to CSS" and run with it. Not come back and ask "Well, how can I do that... what should I do... is there a book I can read... what is CSS... what's wrong with tables". This just doesn't make sense for somebody claiming to be a web designer selling their services.

Anyway, this is one of my areas of concern that I will try to work on, but it's quite difficult when it happens so often.

I agree it can be frustrating but you need to chill out. Take what people say with a pinch of salt and everyone will get along a whole lot better.

Re: What's going on here People!?!?!?

I sympathise with mreine's point.
On the other hand you could also feel flattered these people aspire to become like you so much that they feel obliged to make such claims.

Re: What's going on here People!?!?!?

mreine, I'm with you man, all the way.

What really needs to happen around here is "Member A" needs to stop telling "Member B" that their opinion is wrong.

Some members have a very open mind and see the positive in everything. Fine, say your opinion.

Others are much more strong willed. Fine, say your opinion.

Just quit bitching about each other's opinions.

Just about everything mreine has written since he first joined, I have agreed with. So, there are a few members with whom I don't agree with (they tend to have the opposite opinion of mreine's), but I keep my mouth shut unless they're posting something that is incorrect in a factual way.

Try it out people, allow others to voice their opinion, and let it go.

I agree with all the points raised, as it is very off putting for new members to post in what is our most popular forum function.

Lets hope we can move on.

Re: What's going on here People!?!?!?

I agree with most of the points that have been raised in the 'heated' threads wea re talking about.

It's not what was being said I had a problem with.... it was HOW it was being said.... comments made in a degrading, confronting and agressive manner cannot possibly help no matter how constructive.

I am urging people to have consideration and due diligence when posting within the critique forum... people starting topics there have generally gone to great lengths and long hours to produce something to show us all....

I dont care if its the most shocking site in the world, there is still a friendly and tactful way to communicate the fact it needs a lot of work.

Comments like 'it's ****' and STOP DESIGNING are really helping no-one.

One final point.... can we please keep web site critique for exactly that... critique. May I also point out that it is critique of the website itself... not of the individual, the company or in any way shape or form, it's business ethics.
