Calling all Teens

Recently I have been writing a book, and had written 3 very short chapters. I wont give away the title or topic, but I thought 'why not?' and sent it to Apress, one of the largest book publishers on this topic. To be honest, rightly or wrongly, I was sceptical if they would even bother replying, because rather than hide I told them my age. Thankfully I had misjudged them, but even so I was not expecting a reply. I got one!

The editors, Clay and Ben, seem like really genuine people and they were really nice.

As the father of a 16-year-old, I'm very aware of how impressive it is to undertake what you're trying to do and I commend you on the effort. A book is an ambitious undertaking at any age and I want to encourage you to pursue this goal.
But they did say that the market is crowded for the book, but they did suggest something else:

I also have a suggestion, which is that you are uniquely qualified to write a book for geeky high schoolers, which is not an insignificant market. Think about people you know, people like yourself, and think about what kind of book would best serve this audience. I think you'll have an easier time writing if you can imagine the people you're writing to; your target audience.
So basically, I'm open to suggestions?

Re: Calling all Teens

Firstly, I salute Clay and Ben, because most people out there would have read until they saw the magic number "16," then laughed and pressed the delete button.

i think writing a book for geeky highschoolers would be cool. I would be first in line to buy a copy.

By "open to suggestions" I assume you mean on the topic of this book. As for that I'm dry. I'm trying to figure out what kind of books geeky highschoolers buy. I just buy a few programming books (most of which I never use ) and fiction novels.

Re: Calling all Teens

The problem you would have is that there is an abundance of books in the web-design market.

Thank back to when you first started out, was there something that realy confused you, something that you thought was challanging or impressive?

One idea would be to do something a bit more advanced than HTML and CSS. Could be something along the lines of adding "that something special" to your site, jquerey, moo-tools etc?

Just a few ideas

Craig

Re: Calling all Teens

It was a text-book, but what about a fiction book on a geeky high-schooler? Dunno.
