UK internet

Hey I have a question for the Brits here.
I am currently paying for 8MBs internet but due to my location the max speed I've ever received is 1.5MBs and most of the time I find myself switching from 1MBs to 512KBs and even 256kbs and less.
The problem is with the lines that BT provides so here's my question.
Can I submit a complaint to BT to have the max speed in my area be raised?
The areas only 2 miles away have upto 24MBs internet so I don't see why my area should be capped so low.
Cheers.

Re: UK internet

We had to get 200 supporters to get BT to enable broadband in our village, so it might be the same sort of requirement for your situation.

Nah, the goverment wont force them to do it... You will have to.

I dont think you have any rights where you stand, Alex.

When you get your internet you sign a disclaimer that basically says "Your maximum speed may reach up to 8MB". That may basically means you can expect any speeds.

Re: UK internet

I know the situation for a lot of providers in The Netherlands: if you can only reach half of the speed you're paying for, you're allowed to downgrade or switch providers, without paying a penalty for "breaking the contract" ('cause that's what they're doing, not you..).
Maybe you can downgrade to a 4mbit orso?

Re: UK internet

They are test running the fibre optic cables in a new up and coming development in Kent. If it works out there, they are considering rolling it out Nationwide*

*Nationwide to BT is big cities, they get confused easily.

Unfortunately, BT have now stopped this registration scheme. However, you wouldn’t even be on ADSL if your exchange hadn’t been upgraded. The issue is how far away you are from you rlocal exchange, and unless BT come and place in some new lines it isn’t going to get any better.

Would switching to cable based internet be an option?

Re: UK internet

I hate all ISP's that play that your max speed crap! I do say that is horrible. I pay for 10mbps and I was in the same boat as you with speed. I just kept on them about it and they replaced a few lines and now I getting over 10mbps. (Don't tell! )

Re: UK internet

I'll contact my ISP and ask them if I should ask BT to redo the lines or something then. Cheers

Re: UK internet

Wireless internet may affect the speed between your router/modem and computer (slightly) but those results come from the connection between your router/modem and their server.. so wireless internet will not affect those results.
