Re: Microsoft bid for Yahoo good or bad

In light of Microsoft's reputation for the buggy, frequently hacked, constantly updated operating systems they have offered, I have to ask myself if this will also be present in any other type of "coding" ventures they get into. I mean, even if MS did acquire a major search engine and integrate it with another, I think its safe to assume that they will somehow link this to the Windows platform and as a direct effect the "new and improved" search engine they will no doubt boast about will also become buggy, frequently hacked, constantly updated and, unlike the desktop PC's that so many of us just must have, there will always be the highly competitive Google. Aside from that, obviously MS acquiring any other large IT type company is bad for business. MS seems determined on creating its monopoly?

Yes, but when AOL / NetScape announced they were no longer supporting the Netscape browser they recommended FireFox...

AOL bundled IE with their package as they had a licence agreement with MS, I believe this agreement was in place before they purchased NetScape in 98/99.

Well i'll throw my 2 cents in... I think that Microsoft buying out Yahoo will result in only 1 change... Microsoft's .Net Service being integrated into yahoo. Like mentioned earlier, Yahoo is a great website which happens to have a search engine. When I'm searching for something on Yahoo I use their search engine, if it is ANYTHING on the web however, I use google.

I think Microsoft policy has changed over the years, even Hotmail run on Unix/Apache for many many years after they bought it, it was when it needed to be upgraded that it was move to IIS.

Moving Yahoo to .net plaform I am sure will not be high on MS agenda should they succeed in purchasing Yahoo and even if they do, what is run with that? Unless you are an open source evangelist, .net is a pretty robust platform.

Microsoft is a smart corporation. Buy your competitors....it is the oldest trick in the business world.

I think it is not that easy to compete google. Google is the oldest search engine and have plenty experience in this field.

You are right about Google being difficult to compete with but not sure you are right about it being the oldest search engine.

Google is actually relatively new compared to Yahoo and MSN search I believe. Fact of the day: Yahoo had the chance to buy Google but turned it down. "Google would never be successful" apparently
