Re: Laptop Advice...what do you think?

Well, I have re-thunk this whole laptop vs desktop thing and basically I am going to go with a desktop for now. A Dell to be specific the XPS 420 Model, with an Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache, 2.4GHz, 1066FSB), a 512MB Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT, 320GB HD, 3GB RAM, etc. The deal I am looking at comes with a 22" monitor as well and I'm due. I really appreciate all the advice and suggestions. Down the road I'll get a laptop, probably the Asus I mentioned in the beginning of my post.

BTW, the computer I built uses an ASUS motherboard, ATI Mobility 128gb video card and it's been very good to me, it's just time to move on.

Anita

Re: Laptop Advice...what do you think?

Alienware got bought out over a year ago. Dell bought them, and you won't be seeing them around too much longer. Dell's going to be adding the "Alienware" line to their pc's and replacing the XPSs which are currently there clones of Alienwares.

I've known several people to get Alienware laptops and all of them the screens have been terrible. You gotta make sure you get the upgraded screen cause the standard screen bites.

Re: Laptop Advice...what do you think?

Rather than make a new thread I might as well use this one! I'm looking for a laptop in the region of £350-£500 for when I go to college. It needs to be able to run a few programs at the same time (EG Dw & Ps) and have a decent sized screen. Also, I do not want VISTA! I would like to stay on XP.

Cheers,

Jack

Advice on buying a laptop in that price range... Save up more money. It will be worth the wait if it takes you a while to budget for it.

Re: Laptop Advice...what do you think?

Rules to buying computers:
XP, not Vista
2GB of RAM if you plan on running several programs at once
Intel, not AMD. Intel has double the Cache of AMD
Custom made by local store, big-company brands always have crappy motherboards.

You might need a larger budget though. Custom made labtops are very expensive.

Why not Vista, nothing wrong with it after you've gotten used to it.

hmm.... not a bad idea, but 1GB is actually ok.

??? Both companies have more than one product..... I'm sure there are AMD procs that have 4x as large a cache as an Intel model. And AMD's have a smaller cache because they don't NEED such a large one.....

It's sorta hard to get used to the countless bugs it causes in programs.

True...

What do you mean AMD doesn't NEED a large one? The larger the cache, programs process faster because the program doesn't have to go between the RAM and CPU as much. People have tested both Intel and AMD's modern processors (the core 2 duo, etc.) and you get more processing for your buck with Intel. Stick with Intel.

Big computer companies want to make computers cheap. So what do they do? They give it a crappy motherboard, because motherboards are never listed in the computers specs. Same reason a lot of computers have AMD's, because no average computer buyer ever looks at the cache. *cough* *cough*
