Best open source CMS

Iv been playing around with Drupal and Wordpress, seen some good examples of Wordpress used as CMS. What do you reckon the best one out there is?... Or im thinking about making my own one, but not sure if its really worth the time.

Re: Best open source CMS

Very true, well im just teaching it too myself at the mo, and getting to grips with the php.....But for starters all i really need is for clients to update reasonably static websites by themselves without hassling me.....have been messing around with joomla today, seems pretty decent as well.

Re: Best open source CMS

I find wordpress to be very easy for this type of thing.
Despite being a blogging engine it's very flexible.

Re: Best open source CMS

i too am looking for a CMS that i can mod the templates to customer needs then give them the ability to change/add/delete pages but being as simple as possible.

I did find Simple CMS (http://www.cmsmadesimple.org/) and that seems ok, joomla i thought would be too complex for my type of clients.

Re: Best open source CMS

I don't think there is a "best" CMS out there, it depends on the task you are trying to accomplish. I have found WP extremely easy to use, other swear by Drupal.

Re: Best open source CMS

I would also recommend Wordpress. For developing, it's extremely easy to get to grips with.

More importantly, I think it's the easiest to use from the client / 'non-tecchie' perspective.

Re: Best open source CMS

If you want to create your own templated I'd recommend Joomla. I think that has an easier template-interface..

Re: Best open source CMS

I have done joomla and I just don't like it. I like wordpress. But if you set a client up with it, I'd opt for the hosting that wp uses. That way updates are one button click which clients love. There are website layouts, too. I've not used drupal but I have downloaded it for a test run and liked it.

I think wordpress indexes the best of the bunch which is important in my line of work.

I use Wordpress. Although it's more of a blogging tool, there are several plugins and hacks available to extend it's capabilities. The possibilities are pretty much endless with Wordpress.

Re: Best open source CMS

Joomla is if u wantr something that u ll get support for almost everything u like, u ll have a tons of templates to choose, and many developers to help u.
It has a learning curve of 1-2 motnhs imo. Suitable for all kind of sites....

Drupal is easier to learn and to edit, it has better seo option(buid in) and it can have unlimited tree categories(joomla has 3 for now), also u can have many type of user rights and groups. Suitable for communities.

Wordpress is not a cms, is cool blogging script that its very popular so u can find many solutions that can turn into a CMS. Suitable for not experienced users.

ps: there s also a CMS more advanced calle typo3, i m putting it here just for your knowledge.

Re: Best open source CMS

I have been using joomla (mambo) for a while but recently switched to DRUPAL it is alot more elegant (IMO) and easier to administer. They have many useful modules / themes that can be easily customized.

Re: Best open source CMS

I personally favour modx, although some things can be a mission to implement.

Depending on what is required i also have a basic system which i wrote about a year ago that just has login, pm, blogging, page update, rss support and access levels... it achieves almost everything i need in most sites, and is completely basic, no styling etc making it easy to implemetn it into templates (php includes in the appropriate divs to have that specific content placed there) i use that for most things.

However i personally favour modx for site that require more than that, and if i can't do it with modx i'll look for other cms.

Wordpress i tend to find it very generic looking (although i have seen sites powered by wordpress to COMPLETELY break the mould) showing that it is probably very adaptable.

I think you have to assess it on your needs.

Only get something with the features you need, too many surplas features is just as bad as too many required features.

Also look at readily available mods/hacks/plugins to achieve things you need to do not in the standard features.

Look at customisation and the cleanliness of the code, and most importantly an active (and friendly) support community (i should imagine wordpress has the biggest?)

Re: Best open source CMS

And I prefer UcoZ. It's very easy to use, especially for such beginners as me There are many design templates, which can be adjusted, and modules, that can be used separately and in a combination with each other - blog, forum, link catalog, web polls, guestbook and so on.
