I can host now!

I've finally bought a router (paid yesterday and got it today -> fast delivery!).
If anyone is really stuck for script testing or something,
contact me and I can host it temporarily!

Re: I can host now!

Uhh, a router or a server? I may be wrong, but doesn't a router connect many computers to one. And isn't the computer holding the sites a server ie Apache server? I may be left field but ????????????

Re: I can host now!

Well, theoretically, you can also host websites with a router. You don't even need a fixed IP if your router can use the dyndns.org services or something similar. All you have to do is open and forward some ports....

Re: I can host now!

How does this thing works?
I mean, if I want to host my own site (it's very hard to find a free asp-mysql web host), what should I do?

Just buy a router just like Alex did? Hemmmm....

Re: I can host now!

Noooo. I always had a server, but my router only allowed me to host one site.
No my router allows me to host on multiple ports etc.

Re: I can host now!

Ok, a server is just a normal PC right?
How do you make it to become my host/web host?

I have an extra PC in my home, maybe I could turn that into a server and host my own site from there? Can that be done? Or am I just being stupid

Re: I can host now!

Sure, you can host your site from your own server. The reason most people don't do it is because it's too slow. Remember, the down speed that the client gets is only as high as your up speed.....

Re: I can host now!

Ooo... thanks for the info.

Hey Alex, do your server support ASP-MySQL? Maybe I could test my page with your host.
I've been trying to find a free web host that support both of this but found nothing so far

Thanks for the posts. Not that I design setups for ISP's but it is always good to learn something new (for me). Oh, and I like

What I was trying to bring across is that you CAN host using your own router, BUT if you don't have a proper server and a fast internet connection, then it's not worth it (except for private use...).

Maybe that's because you're looking for the wrong thing.

ASP uses MSSQL

PHP uses MySQL

Re: I can host now!

I'm unsure about ASP.NET etc and everything myself - I've been under the impression that you need to have a Windows server for ASP.NET - I've never used either myself (yet), but I'm very interested in using ASP.NET after a friend of mine recommended using it to build e-commerce sites.

I thought because ASP used a Microsoft server you had to use MSSQL, and with PHP using a Linux server you have to use MySQL.

I think if you're running an ASP server you can run PHP on it too, but not the other way round.

I know on my hosting I'm on a Linux server so I only have PHP and MySQL.

Re: I can host now!

You can host .NET (or ASP) on Linux servers as well ... you need ChiliSoft (which is now owned by Sun) to run it ... there's probably something better as I haven't been playing around with Linux in a while but ... that's what it used to be.

And ASP page can connect to any db. At work, our .NET pages connect to Oracle.

Currently I'm on a windows server with ASP, ASP.NET, MSSQL (don't get it though ), MYSQL, PHP, Ruby, Python and PERL.

So yes if you're really stuck for testing I can help for now.
In a few days I'm installing fedora though, which will have apache rather than IIS.

If you want to test for a few days, PM me and I will setup an ftp account for you.
