That's not a bad thing. Some places deliberately remove that so ppl can't make changes to system and why would novices need the run command?

Re: What do you think of Windows Vista

The guy sitting next to me in the office right now has Vista on his new shiny laptop.
He isn't computer savvy at all so I'm getting questions from him all the time about how to do things.
Can somebody lend me a bat please. Its either him or Vista but one of them has to go.

I don't like it - but that could be because its new to me.
I'll probably do with Vista exactly what I did with XP and get it once a couple of SP's have been released.

---------------

Oh yeah - I find this kind of stuff a bit worrying -

Quote:
Microsoft has the right to regularly check the legitimacy of the software and CAN DELETE certain programs without your knowledge.
and this -

Quote:
Only Windows Defender will determine what constitutes unwanted software.
^^ Does this mean Microsoft are rendering all other anti virus and spyware useless - or does it mean they can override your software should they want to install 3rd party rubbish?

I hope what I have heard and read is wrong.
Updates are fine - its Microsoft's responsibility to update bugs etc but reserving full control over spyware and virus tools???

Hmmmmmmmm.

Someone tell me there are rational reasons for this. Id love to have more faith in Microsoft - I swear by XP - please faithify me.

Re: What do you think of Windows Vista

I Tried vista on my desktop, if it was good i was going to install it on my laptop also, but it was very buggy, and my brother hated it because many game's didn't work with it, and that pc was mostly used for gaming, so we "downgraded" back to xp and i got a mac.

Re: What do you think of Windows Vista

Microsofts ability to lock and ruin your software came out when they started their 'Genuine Advantage' campaign with Windows XP. My brother was hit by this when he bought a new computer from someone who had a pirated copy of XP. The genuine advantage tool that came as part of a Windows update basically locked the computer down.

The thing I find with windows is this:

People have been complaining for an awfully long time about the things that are wrong with windows XP. Vista corrects so many of these problems that you could be forgiven for thinking it isn't a Microsoft but because some of the things that Xp users have adapted too are gone, everyone thinks it's devil spawn.

The aesthetic upgrade in Vista is great but it's some of the things that Vista does that the end user will never really understand that make it great and means it XP will *never* be able to match it.

Security Wise
The UAP is great for casual computer users who click randomly just to get rid of popus. The screen lockdowns make them think a bit about their actions. This can be disabled by people comfortable with their ability to secure the system.

The actual Kernel of Vista is different in every copy so the potential for a virus to actually bring down the system is dramatically reduced.

Windows defender, although possibly attempting to take control of the firewall/virus market, is great. How many problems have 3rd party anti-virus and firewalls caused people in the past? Rather than having to turn all your security off to install apps (like you would have to with some program installs on XP) programs that want to install themselves on Vista have to work around Windows Defender as it is part of the operating system.

Fully configurable firewall that will warn you of any attempt to access the internet by a program you have not allowed.

Useability Features
Vista's file and dearch indexing is the best I have seen of any operating system. Full desktop searches of my 300GB hard drive take less than seconds. Vista will remember my searches and I can save them if I wish.

'My Documents' etc is gone. Your user file does't have a designated place anymore, you can move the files to a completely different place on the hard drive without adverse affects.

The Start Menu is leaner, faster and has itegrated search allowing access to anything within seconds.

Program caching. Vista is a gem for this. My system has 4GB of ram and Vista will 'remember and predict' the programs I use regularly and store the complete program to ram. This means the program will launch with barely a delay. When the current processes are cutting into this cached ram, Vista will release it.

The sidebar is great!

__________

This is a very small part of what I think makes Vista far and away better than XP could ever hope to be. Please don't take me for a windows lover ( I hate that sterotype) as I don't get into that argument. I run Ubuntu on a second computer and have a Mac and I love each and use them for what they do best.

I think the debate over Vista vs XP has gone on for too long. My advice would be -- stop looking for what XP had that Vista got rid of, look at what Vista has that XP could never have had.

I've reinstalled and activated my copy six times already on the same hardware and it's worked every time.
