Diamonds in the dirt.
A thing that is beautiful yet is surrounded by things that are not. Someone pure in a group of corrupted people. Something altogether wholesome that is in with all the dirty, sordid thingies. You get me? To say someone is a jewel in the rough is to say that they stand out as good even though though all around is the opposite of that. It's a metaphor. And a nice one at that. Pete.
