Re: How do YOU navigate the forums?

Ok, so it seems like we're split in two groups:
- those of us who mostly use the "get new posts" button and stay away from the forum list
- those of us who navigate per forum, and never use the "get new posts" button
...and no-one really uses both.

Now I have a question for those who use the forum list: would it be better as a menu? either a tree on the left column, or a bar at the top with sections and drop-down to each individual forum?

Re: How do YOU navigate the forums?

PS.: DOESN'T ANYONE USE THE "USER CP" LINK?
I use it so much it's actually the URL I have bookmarked. I see the control panel to see what threads have been replied to, then I click "get new posts"...

I'm only asking because I suspect many people don't even realise we have this feature available and might spend a lot of time looking through the forums to re-find the threads they are taking part in...

I'm surprised we don't have a jump to drop down

Yes I find that too. I sometimes just temporarily bookmark a thread in my browser if I know I want to back to it later because its quicker than trying to find the thread again.

Re: How do YOU navigate the forums?

Well, I have mentioned this to rob. it would be great if we could have a simple way of bookmarking threads... It doesn't even need any clever server-side forum stuff. I could do this is javascript and use a cookie to store the threads... any comments?

Re: How do YOU navigate the forums?

same I always use the get new posts. I tend to open every thread in firefox tabs and just middle click the ones I don't wanna read. So basically just get new posts for me.

Would be useful to be able to temporarily bookmark threads within the site actually!

Re: How do YOU navigate the forums?

Yes, we have a bookmark system on Webforumz. It allowed you to bookmark any post or thread and it would be saved within your usercp, under a section called Bookmarks.

We...(me and Ryan) were never able to get this working with the forum. We had it working on the development version of Webforumz, but it had bugs. I was about to make it active, as we worked out all of the bugs, but then found out it did not work with VB 3.6.8. So back to the drawing board...hehe.

Re: How do YOU navigate the forums?

Just had a chat with Rob about bookmarking and we have this system, as Jacob said above, and it works!
This link, next to the date on the header of each post: Add Post To Favorites
Only problem is that it bookmarks the individual post, not the thread.
But Rob knows how to change that and it will be available on the new skin... YAY!

No, it's a manual process I'm afraid.

Re: How do YOU navigate the forums?

Cant say I've ever used the new posts. Mainly use 3 things....
1 - the home page - find a topic I want to get involved in, or post.
(I am visiting the forum to find something out mainly, or to help out, so I'll go where I need to find something, or go where I think I can give something back)
2 - use the search facility for whatever I am looking for
3 - go to the cafe for anything of interest

Whatever you guys do to update or reconfigure this forum, please ensure it works at least as well as the current format. Any change is only good if its an improvement. I would say you have a very well structured and operable site. If it aint broke.....etc

Also, dont alter the aesthetics just because you can..........I come here for the content - the look obviously helps, but if I say the look is secondary then you might reply it shouldnt matter too much if you change it, ..........but again, any change should only be for improvements, not just for the sake of keeping it trendy, fresh, upto date etc etc
Whatever you do decide, best of luck old bean, we'll still all be here when the smoke clears..............
