Anyone want to test this for me?

http://www.split-visionz.net/MultiDesk_v1.0.zip

^^Im attempting to write an application to give windows users the option of using multiple desktops, like whats built into most Linux distros.

Anyone want to test it and let me know of any problems that come about?

Re: Anyone want to test this for me?

That's pretty cool mate. Something that made me uhh...freak for a second.

When I switched to another desktop, and hit the close button, it stayed on the selected desktop and none of the original stuff came back...I reopened the program and there it all was, but that caused me a bit of uh....OH CRAP!ness...lol

Great program man. I like it.

Ya, it's a nice program. You might want to include some help files and perhaps an uninstall also. I look forward to seeing how this evolves.

Re: Anyone want to test this for me?

thanks for the feedback you guys. lol. Yeah I never thought about making it return to the default desktop for some reason, that wouldn't be to hard to add and is pretty much a neccesity.

As far as help files, I might add those when i decide to actually release it. As it stands right now Im still really early in development. I probably wont add an uninstall though. Its always going to be a single file executable so all you have to do is delete the executable to get rid of it. Im making it like that because I want it to be portable and be able to run from a flash drive or external hard drive so I can use it on whatever computer Im at.

Note: I just found out from someone else that theres a problem with control-alt-delete bring up the taskmanager. The task manager only ever shows in the original desktop no matter which desktop your on when you press control-alt-delete.
I know what the problem is and how to make it work, I just don't know for sure I want to fix it because it will involve making registry edits

Ah, yes, the curse of Windows everywhere. I think Bill put them in just to make people scream and lose their minds.

Re: Anyone want to test this for me?

I like it.. It's simple, lightweight and does the trick.. What I was thinking. Wouldn't it be cool if you could use the windows drag 'n drop function on all desktops? Like so:
I'm having all my email and browser-stuff on desktop 1, now I want to drag a pieces out of my email into my graphic program, which I have on desktop 2.
Drag it to your Multidesk button #2 and the second desktop opens, without letting go of the mousebutton..
I'd like that

Thats exactly what I want to do, I want to make the desktops look like their mapped to a 3D cube. But thats still a little ways away.

Cool, works ok on Vista, too. What language are you developing in? If its a C-based language I'd be glad (and interested) to help with coding. How are you releasing it? Open source? GNU? Freeware?

Yeah its written in C/C++ using the win32 API. Im not too sure how I'll be releasing it. Probably just post it up on all the download sites such as download.com like I do with alot of my stuff and then with this one I might even release the source code on my site because its so hard to find any information on how to implement this using the win32 API so someone might find it useful.

All of the info I could find about doing it was all written in MFC not straight API so I had to do a alot of tinkering to figure out how to do it. Thanks for the offer to help but I'll probably just keep working on this on the side by myself along with the other 20 projects Im working on. I'll send you the code to check out if you want though, its only about 3 functions and 1 class with about 8 or 9 methods. Its really dirty code right now from tinkering and trying to figure it all out.

Yeah Ive noticed this one myself, I have another version that has a system tray Icon for each desktop, but then Windows' 'hide unused icons' feature is an annoyance to that. So now the next step of the project is converting it to run as a desktop toolbar on the taskbar itself. But Im having trouble finding information on how to implement that in the API and not MFC so thats going to take me some time to figure out.

Can you create shortcuts to switch desktops? (Like ctrl+alt 1, 2, 3, 4)
