Memorial Day 2007

Memorial Day has been hard for me for a long time because of the friends I lost in the Vietnam War. I have weep at their graves and asked the age old question...Why?

Irregardless, whether you agree with war or not, You have to agree that all of the men and women who have died in wars deserve our respect and admiration. And the prayer that perhaps in the future death in war will just be a memory.

I have a lot of respect for those who put their life on the line to protect those who are not even aware they are in any danger. True selflessness.

As a side note, it is also a national holiday in the UK today but I assume for different reasons. Anyone know what the UK one is for?

It's a religious celebration - Whitsun/Pentecost, which is celebrated on the 7th Sunday after Easter (or something like that), not quite sure what the significance of it is, or why we get a day off work the day after it, but I'm not complaining! I think it's just coincidence that this year it falls on the same day as the Memorial Day in the US.

Because Pentecost marks the birth of the christian church and as Britain is a christian country we get the day off. It is the day referred to in the bible as when the disciples of jesus were touched by the holy spirit which gave them 'tongues of fire' meaning they could preach in the many languages of the world. They then went out and started preaching to the people in the people's native tongues.

This is the event that historians use to indicate the start of the church.

Thanks for that. Very good Dan, I'm impressed. I'm supposed to be religious too. Oh well.
