how do you get web design work?
Hi folks,
As an eager web designer, but one with limited portofolio, whats the best way to advertise and get work? Any thoughts really appreciated. Cheers Gerry.......

Google Business is a good place to start. I don't know if they have it in England, but here if someone is looking for web design in Google Maps in my area, my name, website and phone number pops up. I get calls once in a while, but most of them have been commercial stuff or programming recently.

I used to advertise in small local newspapers where ads were inexpensive. I'd put in a business card sized ad and it would come out once a week. That worked well for me.

Well this is good old Business 101...shoe leather. Hit every business big medium or small size. Offer your services.
Another is to find the business in your city that do not have websites or ones that could use an overhaul. quick design a site and then get your foot in the door. Proactive is the word...if you aren't you will be left in the dust of every other designer.

Sara reminded me that is what I did.. I searched the newspapers for business ads. If they did not list a website, I contacted them. I got several that way very very quickly. Then referrals blossomed!

Yeah once you have a solid client base you should get loads of referrals if you are doing a good job, or at least that is the way it happens in the flash world....lol.

Hi you could go on www.gumtree.com which is a classifieds website and advertise yourself on there and its free. Hope it goes well and you definetly get somewhere as there are lot of opportunities to filled.
