Writers Block

When it comes to designing my own site, I love to do it. It's rather theraputic to know that I'll never have an angry client or be forced to put in a right-click prevention script. But this past month, I can't design a single thing that I even remotely like. I've got no problem designing sites for other people, but I just can't make myself happy. I think part of the problem is I really like my current site, so it's an extra high hurdle to jump this time around. This happen to anyone else? Any suggestions, illegal drugs or uber awesome inspirational sites?

Re: Writers Block

Of course this happens ... one of my problems is usually a little different.
I usually have to many ideas and have a hard time focusing in on "the one".

One thing I was taught by a woman that does visual work is to close your eyes, slow your breathing, and make a mental picture of what the perfect site would look like. Sit there and look at it. That's what you end up designing.

What is the background color, is there a design, what do the edges look like.
Fonts? Color of fonts? What is the main design feature? Just let it pop into your mind and then memorize it.

It works for me and I'm not drunk!
Sounds kooky I know.. if that doesn't work, maybe a day off and a little nap will do you good!
*wisdom provided at no cost because it's probably not worth a penny*
Hey I think I just found my new signature for the site!!!!

Ryan, Just remember...Variety is the spice of life. Creativity is 9/10th work and 1/10th inspiration. I have a vivid imagination and spent years working in the design side of theatre, so I don't have any problem. But if you do find yourself stumped....go to a place where you can be relaxed and let your mind wander....turn of logical thinking and free float.....(from my hippie days)

Re: Writers Block

Thanks to both of you! Especially Sara. She reminded me that the place to go when I need to think is a contemporary furniture store. Lol. I seriously always get the best ideas in furniture stores. There's something about the concrete, glass and stainless steel that gets my endorphines and imagination going. I thought of my business card at one which coincidently led to my current website design. And my business card picks up chicks for me without any effort from me other than handing it over If only I could foil a website!

I need to find a spot away from home to brainstorm.

Ha, I know exactly how you feel Ryan. I think my site has been closed for about two years...lol Kinda because I have time, but mostly because I start working on something and it looks great! Then after working with it for 3 weeks I get tired of it and start over again....lol

Re: Writers Block

It only took me 6 month's to make a homepage i half liked. Already i am changing parts of it. Your harshest critic is yourself, that is why making sites for yourself are often the longest and most difficult. Just keep at it and once you find something you vaguely like, just keep on tweaking it until it works.
