Why would I want to do this?

I just recieved an email from a web designer who had visiited our site (http://www.cbmgroup.co.uk ), heres the email;

Quote:
Dear CBM Group,

I came across your website through an advert you placed in the Northampton Business Times.

Having looked at your current website, I wondered if you'd be interested in looking into a redesign at some point?

Please check out my website (www.timkeay.co.uk) for my current portfolio and let me know if I can be of any assistance.

Regards,

Tim Keay
Now ive had myself a little lucky at his website, and, whilst i do concede that his design (estetics) skills are somewhat more proliffic than my own, I also noticed that he is still using table based layouts and javascript for his rollover effects, not a drop of CSS anywhere on his sites.

The question then .... Is it ever acceptable to sacrifice W3C compliancy and accessability for attractivness?

My thoughts are that if i was really concerned with having a super-sexy-website I could employ a graphic designer to draw layouts for me, but my current web-design is hardley repugnent and serves my purposes well.

Regardless of this I have replied to his email and offered to re-code all of his sites to brign them into line with current web-standards

And yes, this post was somewhat motivated by a mildly hurt ego

Oh that must have stung a bit! Your site is fine, and I'm glad you responded the way you did. Head to head you'd probably outrank him in Search engines.
Hang in there Accurrax

Re: Why would I want to do this?

We had a similar one to that. We had an "Under Construction" sign on our website for work and a local guy emailed us and said along the lines of "Your website is very unprofessional, I can offer a cheap service to upgrade your website". I replied "Dear Sir, Thank you for your email. Unfortunately we cannot offer this job to you for one reason, the reason is if you don't understand the words "Under Construction", how can we trust you to code our site? I look forward to your swift response in your defence. Yours sincerely, Ross"

Your response is great.. That will be a right kick in the teeth for him

Re: Why would I want to do this?

heres the mail i sent back :P

Quote:
Tim,

I would like to thank you for your kind offer to assist in upgrading my website.

I am however not currently looking to move my site towards a position of non W3C compliancy, and unfortunately, your website, and those contained within your portfolio are not valid Xhtml.

please see:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=www.timkeay.co.uk

which clearly displays your site is not even valid html 4.0, nevermind Xhtml.

This is not a problem, and I would like to offer my own services as a web designer to assist you in moving your site away from a table based layout and towards a full external CSS (cascading style sheets) based layout. I propose removing tables for layout purposes, and replacing with compliantly styled <div></div> tags. I would also be happy to recreate your java script rollover effects by using a simple CSS image swap.

I am impressed by your design abilities, and your site looks very pretty, so I would not suggest changing the outward look of the site, more optimize the code behind the “shop front”, to increase accessibility and search engine rankings.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

CBM

NO! Please!!! My "super-sexy-website", that won WOTM for February might I add is valid XHTML Transitional and uses CSS to it's fullest!

And there are some pretty sexy CSS site out there.

And you sent him a GREAT reply ... let us know if he writes back. I'm curious to see what he'll say about you offering your services to get his site up to standards

his reply

Hi Marc,

Thanks for your constructive comments.

As you seem to have picked up from my own website, I am more a graphic designer by trade, so any advice I can get on the technical side of website design and construction is much appreciated. From a web design perspective, I am entirely self-taught and found using tables within Dreamweaver a lot easier for laying out sites to begin with. I realise this isn't the prefered way of structuring websites, so am starting to look into using DIVs and CSS more. However, as with anything, it's difficult finding the time to learn!

I have invested in a couple of pretty good books to learn more about CSS and table-less page layouts, but if there are any other sources (i.e. books, magazines, websites, etc) you'd recommend, I'd be most grateful for the info.

May I ask what software you use? And also, are there any particular web hosts you'd recommend?

Regards,

Tim
He's not such a bad chap then
