Re: Great News!

Hey, that's cool, my OH studies Electronics and Comp. Sci. at Strathclyde! He's in his 2nd year now and he loves the CS side of it! Hehe, d'you think you'll go into halls or live in private accomodation?

Are you wanting to work in America after the degree or do a year of study abroad?

Re: Great News!

Great! I'll just stay at home, I live in a large town about 20 minutes south of Glasgow, so it isn't far to go! Much cheaper too

Depending on what degree I do, i'll either have a work experience year or I won't. The 2 courses are identical apart from this aspect. I have already got a position lined up though, with Raytheon! I would be working out of San Diego in California for a year, making £65000 (The personnel manager is an old family friend ). This would greatly help with tuition fees and such, plus it would buy me a nice BMW too

Greatly looking forward to it though

Re: Great News!

Haha, thanks

For someone with a Computing Degree, America offers the best job opportunites! I have found that for a Programming job in america, with identical responsibilities to one in the U.K, the American one pays roughly 40-50% more. This is partly becuase of American taxation, which is much more leniant than that in the UK.

I also find that Housing in the US is much better than in the UK. For instance, a standard studio (1 room) flat in Glasgow city centre would cost about £275,000, roughly $510,000. FOr that in many parts of the US, a much better house in a much better environment can be found!

All round it seems like the best option to try America

I don't want to burst your bubble, but what your job offer is planning to pay will not go far in California. I live in Northern California (San Francisco) and a little fixer upper will cost you at least $1,000,000.00...Yes, one million. So if you do decide to come, Save your pennies and pray Raytheon sends you to another part of the country.

Too true. That's why we have an immigration problem. The hispanics hop the border and do the jobs the Americans are to lazy/snotty to do! America has a pretty good education system despite what some people say. Just alot of people don't take advantage of it.

Re: Great News!

The US has good higher education, but public high school in the West particularly is disgraceful. Nevada having the lowest level of high school education out of all the states. If only the marijuana law would've passed here (1 ounce legal for private possession and use), all the tax proceeds would've gone straight to our educational system.

Re: Great News!

but all the kids would've been stoners and learnt nothing anyway

It's funny to hear you say 'public school' in that sense, in the UK public schools cost a fortune to attend, i.e. Eton, Harrow and Winchester (where the queen would send her kids). Heh, WFz is teaching me about your culture

Re: Great News!

Haha, well, supposing it would've passed (which it was close 46 to 54 percent), you would have had to of been 21 to buy it legally. Yes, public schools are free here, but not a lot else is. I personally transferred to a private school after moving to the US. I couldn't stand the low level of maturity, disrespect and clicks so abundant in over crowded schools of 3000+ students.

Ryan, what you say is so true. This is a true story.
A friend and I were discussing dictators and this kid asked, "What's a Dictator?" I swear my mouth dropped open in disbelief and I asked if he had graduated from High School. He nodded and I asked, "Did they teach you about Hitler?" He nodded and all I could say was 'That's a dictator." Just so you know this was a graduate of a California school.

Re: Great News!

Haha, yep. That's the west for you. Too many students and not enough teachers. I forget what the exact number was, but in Vegas, the schooling system is in need of about 500 hich school teachers...

Re: Great News!

Oh how sad! I think there are good and bad schools everywhere... We live in a very small community and our school is excellent! But then again, we moved here because of the school. We didn't leave anything to chance.

My nephew works at Cisco and he is rolling is greenbacks and housing is very affordable....
