CV/resume review, please

My CV is online at:

http://www.cs.stir.ac.uk/~snw/cv.html

Could people please take a look at it and give their thoughts? Would you employ me based on this CV? Any sections that need to be lengthened or shortened, or explained more fully, or that are completely unecessary? At the moment it takes up about 1 and half pages when printed.

Thanks all!

Re: CV/resume review, please

It looks very good.

I realise you may have left this information out deliberately in the on-line version but any CV you are sending to a prospective employer should start with your contact details and some other basics, eg:

Address, Phone number(s), Driving licence status, (Non-)Smoker.

Place your awards after your actual educational qualifications they mean less to the employer.

Place your work/projects in most recent first order.

Some very mute points:

...oracle database... Oracle should have an uppercase 'o' as it's a company name.

...and have sang... should I think be ...and have sung... or ...and I sang...

Hope this helps.

Re: CV/resume review, please

I am still working on mine as well but I would go as simple as possible for this. Try to leave out personal stuff and just get the meat of what you want to project to potential employers. Mine is dull, boring and sucks which is good for stuff like this.

"Address, Phone number(s), Driving licence status, (Non-)Smoker."
- Personal details are on the print out - as you say, I don't fancy showing them online! I haven't said, however, that I can't drive; I do have a provisional and hope to take my test at Easter, but what should I write?

"Place your awards after your actual educational qualifications they mean less to the employer."
- Okay these have been flipped! Do you think they should go after my employment section?

"Place your work/projects in most recent first order."
- This has been changed. I was hoping to put my Summer job first as it's the most important, but I guess that's unescapable!

"...oracle database... Oracle should have an uppercase 'o' as it's a company name...and have sang... should I think be ...and have sung... or ...and I sang..."
- Thanks for these, I'll get them sorted (BGarner pointed out the 'sang' to me earlier, and I didn't get the chance to change it after I posted this up!)

- How do you propose I go about achieving this one? At one time I deleted my 'hobbies and interests section'; then a potential employer came in and spoke about what he looked for on a CV - and he said that 'hobbies and interests' was the first place he went to. After the talk, I went and put it straight back in! I think there's probably some unneccessary fluff still, but I don't know where!

Some other questions for you all:
This year I'm doing paid work with younger years/postgrad students, 5 hours a week, helping them with their practical coding classes. Should this go in my employment section or hobbies and interests?

Also, I added in a bit about webforumz moderating, and enjoying working with websites; d'you think it's suitable to put this in my hobbies & interests? Additionally, I wanted to add that I'm quite passionate about standards and accessibility, is this the place to add it?

Thanks very much guys,
Snow

Re: CV/resume review, please

I'd say since the work with post grad students is PAID would make it part of employment experience.

Webforumz would be interests imo.

I'd hire you...

Re: CV/resume review, please

Thank you! (don't suppose you have any jobs going? )

I'll add the job into my Employment section then - although it'll push my Summer job even further down. D'you think it should go in at all?

Re: CV/resume review, please

I don't know snow. Other's might be more able to answer whether you should include your current job.

Your summer job was great and probably shouldn't be pushed down too far...
Maybe you should include it in interests so you can get it in but not take away from your summer job???????

Re: CV/resume review, please

You should definitely include your teaching/coaching work as this says something about you as a person as well as highlighting another skill.

I would add your interest in Accessibility and Standards to your Computing Skills section as it shows you are aware of these issues.

I wouldn't take out hobbies and interests - it's definately something poeple look at - very very important.

Re: CV/resume review, please

Okay, I've fiddled with things a bit, included my term time job and added in about moderating and standards and stuff; questions:

1. Is the 'bold'ness of my skills okay?
2. Should I add that I have no driving liscence?
3. Is the order of the topics correct?
4. Is my little spiel on accessibility/standards okay?
5. Is there any fluff I should cut out?
6. Is the description of my jobs at the correct level?

Thanks in advance!
Snow

Re: CV/resume review, please

Would I be right in thinking that this course included a year out in industry?

If so, I can't see that you mention that year.

Oh, and you're still 'sanging'.
