Notepad Is annoying me

I've just starteted to code up my new website, it has some rather large databases behind it and requires an extreme ammount of php, no problem, but notepad is killing me.

Can anyone recomend a decent FREE text editor with line numbers built into it? It would also be nice if it self indented code and even better if it colour coded it but at the moment id be happy with just line numbers, as trying to debugg without them is line counting hell on wheels.

Recomendations anyone?

Why not spend a bit of money? I spent 25 dollars on skEdit (it's for Mac, sorry), and it's awesome! Maybe there is some great free text editor out there, but 25 bucks isn't the end of the world, especially if the application has as many features as mine does

Haha, well, the old saying "you get what you pay for" is generally true with the exception of some open source software.

Have you used NVU? How about HTML-Kit? How about TextPad? How about Notepad++?

If you don't mind paying a bit, I would recommend Professional Notepad. It cost $18.00. They are all great, I have them all and use them all!!

or if you have FF then you can use the "text editor" or it when you view the source. Just a thought. But it dont have numbers, just colors.

I've used html-kit and it's alright. But I'd buy something if I were you. Start by getting a mac and then buy text-mate or BBedit (both are excellent). Simple.

I would highly recommend checking out PsPad. It is free and I love it!!

Well, as the saying goes, if it hurts, don't do it. So lets rephrase that to your problem. If notepad is annoying you, don't use it.
