help with converting HTML to XHTML

Hi,
I have been told that I need to convert my HTML pages to XHTML but as I use the WYSIWYG side of Dreamweaver, am unsure of the easiest way to do this.
Can anyone offer any advice on how I can do this?
Many thanks

Re: help with converting HTML to XHTML

Not sure you'll be able to do it with a WYSIWYG yet.
Think DW is still only geared up for HTML and CSS.

You could probably change it over manually.

It's not something you can just...do, unless you know what it is you need to do. You won't be able to do it on the WYSIWYG side of dreamweaver, go into code view.

XHTML is hardly different HTML. There are a few attibutes that got 86'ed, the most prominent being target="", which was handy for opening popup windows. Single open and close tags like <br> and <img> simply became <br /> and <img />. If you don't mind going through your pages and making some boring changes, go for it! The w3c XHTML validator will help you iron out anything you missed.

Re: help with converting HTML to XHTML

Actually, Dreamweaver 8 has some tools that will help with this. I'm not familiar with versions of DW prior to 8, so I don't know if older versions have the same tools, but in my opinion, you need to do the following:

1) Convert the page type: From the file menu, choose 'convert', then set the type to XHTML.

2) Check your markup: Again, from the file menu, choose 'check page', then 'validate markup'.

Now of course, when you validate markup, any problems will show up in the code window, but Dreamweaver will give you warnings of what potential troublespots are. You'll still need some code knowledge to fix some of the problems. I agree with everyone else on the usefulness of w3schools for this, but at least these steps will give you a head start.
