Having customer update website?
A future customer of mine wants me to design a website for him, but wants to update the site without my assistance in the future. He isnt the most PC savy guy I know so I am looking for a SIMPLE solution. Basically i will designing the site and handing it over to him.
Is there a way that this can be done where he doesnt have to use a design application like frontpage/dreamweaver to update his site? Thanks fo the help! MP

You need to look at Content Management Systems (CMS). These allow you to specify the areas that can be edited by the client. For practical purposes, some require that the site be built using the system, others do not. Some systems are available free and others cost money. Have a look for them on Google and select ones you think meet your requirements and worthy of a closer look.

The easiest way would be Adobe Contribute. other than that a good CMS would be a good choice as well.

Yep I agree CMS. I had to do the same for one of my client’s website. Except my client had two copies of the website. One high speed version (flash) and an XHTML and CSS version. So took allot more work. But just one part should work.

Are CMS applications another way to design a website and allow for specific content to be edited through a browser? Im trying to get an understanding of what a CMS is and how I would encorporate a website with it. I create my webistes using a WYSIWYG editor, I code very few things but do use manual code when necessary. Are creating websites in a CMS as easy to design as it would be in a WYSIWYG editor? (applying flash and images)

Ok so say you have a website. You have the regular visitors. Then the guy you want to edit the website goes to a URL like.
yourdomain.com/edit/ Types in a username and password. Then in a WYSIWYG view. (Like Word) He selects the text and or pictures, he wants to change and changes it then hits save. The website is instantly updated, with the new content. If you need more detail or suggestions of good cheap CMS just reply and let me know.

a CMS (Content Management System) is just that. It usually stores all information regarding the site such as xhtml structure, css, content, images, files etc.. while providing this in a easy to use centralized location accessible from anywhere at any time.

I agree that Adobe Contribute would be a good start. You can design the site in Dreamweaver using templates and the user can only touch the areas you specify. If the user is a little more tech savy, then a CMS is the next best step. Just find one that you and the users would be comfortable using. Also be aware that most CMS systems require a database to store the objects.

For Textpattern, you don't really need to bee too proficient in computers. If he can write an email, chances are he'll be able to sift through and find what he needs to do to get the changes made.

That and limit his account access so he can only access certain areas and not mess it up heh. Textpattern owns.
