stopping your website being pinched?
Sorry for being a newbee
I thought i would give the demo a try 'Web protecter'. I assume they let you try it for a limited time? I tried to utilise the program although it didn't seem to do much? As i could save the pages as normal when i tested it? I selected the options it suggested. I might be missing the lpot, so please say if I am Maybe there is a better way of disableing save as? Re: stopping your website be pinched?
the problem is, no matter what you do it is ALWAYS possible to steal your site design
there are ways - encrypting your code ( you can pay for a programme that will do this ) - but not very good if the person knows website design - you just copy the layout, steal the css and insert the pictures. the only other way that i know of is to make your whole site out of flash - you can steal the site, but you cant change anything ( including content ) - making it useless to any thief ( but you can still steal the images, layout, and reproduce it ) the best you could do is put a copyright notice at the bottom of your site explaining what people can and cant do, and if you find anyone who has broken that notice, you have the law ( but i wouldnt pin all your hopes on that either ) if your looking for complete protection - there is none, and there will always be ways around any encription and any 'watermarks' on images - thats the best my thinking takes me - sorry Last edited by saltedm8; Aug 14th, 2006 at 02:33. |

Re: stopping your website be pinched?
The best thing and the worst thing about HTML websites is that they can be viewed and reverse engineered. No stoppin it. It's harder with database driven stuff but it's still possible.
It's just something you have to deal with by putting legal (Copy this and we'll kill you) messages on your pages and in your code.

Re: stopping your website be pinched?
Agree with the points above, if someone wants to steal your side its pretty easy
But on ther other side if your very paranoid and worried about some magical information you have created, this can be a handy resource http://www.copyscape.com/ They have a paid version which I dont use but generally this is quite a handy link |

Re: stopping your website be pinched?
Its not that my website code is magical, its just that somone could 'save as'
'thankyou very much goodbye!' without paying. As you say its a question of trust at the end of the day, so I have faith in the people i'm doing the work for. If someone was foolishish enough to reverse engineer what I was doing now they would have to do it to 40 odd pages. |

Not to mention programs like Page Sucker which make it even easier.

Re: stopping your website be pinched?
Ahhhhhhhhh... I think everyone had the wrong idea about what you were after. You are concerned that the actual person you are doing the work for will try to take the pages and run. I get it now!
Well, there isn't much protection against this either except to get a signed contract and maybe a deposit. Doing anything related to digital content can be touchy, but I've yet to have any sort of concerns like this. I don't do any business from the internet with unknown people either, so that helps. You sort of roll the dice and take your chances when dealing with strangers. You can't exactly demonstrate the functionality of a site without letting them have access. I'm not really sure what the exact answer is here other then get a deposit, do only the amount of work the deposit covers and then get more money before you proceed. This way, at any time they may decide to run with it, you have already been paid for what you've done. |

Re: stopping your website be pinched?
if thats what you meant, you will probebly be better off putting it on your own server and letting them test it from there

Re: stopping your website be pinched?
I can pull the plug at any time, its my hosting plan. Im thinking more long term, having the ability to lock up a website would be great.
But it seems you guys are saying that 'Web Protecto'r is utter b*****ks? I was thinking of buying this programme I surprized that ripping a web page is still very easy? |

Re: stopping your website be pinched?
I always get half the $$ up front as a good will payment, this does two things.
1) protects my interests if they do take mockups etc and give it to another designer, then I get paid for doing basically nothing 2) helps deter such things because they are already out of pocket.

Re: stopping your website be pinched?
Its common practice really. Most companies should expect that. of course if there is ever any doubt you use a 3rd party escrow to hold the funds. and of course contracts can come into play. I get paid if you take my work and give it to someone else, I give the $$ back if I fail to deliver etc etc...

Re: stopping your website be pinched?
Suppose that's right. It'll only take one major player to offer a No-down-payment option and they then start poaching customers...
