Programming a shopping cart

I am almost done developing this e-commerce site and my client just asked me to add a shopping cart. I have some templates, but I want to start from scratch, is there a specific way of starting to do it? What should I consider when building a shopping cart?

Re: Programming a shopping cart

easiest thing to do is look at other shopping cart solutions and work out what you need for this customer, you will need to start drawing this on paper as they can get big, its the same as doing any content manageent system no different but you need to find out from your client exactly the functionality they are after, first thign id consider is the amount of time this may take you starting from scratch, be good experience but get your money first well 50% at least !!!, by the time you finissh your customer may have changed thier minds or installed something horrible like OS commerce !!

Re: Programming a shopping cart

Trying to code a shopping cart from scratch is a massive job and you would need to be extremely fluent in PHP/ASP, MySQL or whatever language you intend to code it in.

If you already have a website designed but would just like to add the extra functionality of a shopping cart then there are a couple of solutions...

  • Roman Cart - Complete shopping cart, you just add the button code to your existing templates. Most gateways are supported with free and commercial options.
  • PayPal Cart - Again you can just add buttons to your existing template. Customers can pay with their PayPal account or by Credit Card.
  • Standard CMS cart such as CubeCart. The problem there is that CubeCart is a complete CMS so it takes over your whole website, however it is very easy to customise to match your current design but i know thats not really what you are looking for.
