[SOLVED] Validation - adding alt property to images via CSS?

Hi,

I'm validating my site and it's telling me to add an alt="" property to every image.

Is there a way to add this to all images via css, instead of doing it manually?

Thanks,

No. You have to do it manually.

You should try to choose descriptive alternative text for each image. If the image is purely decorative, however, leave it blank (alt="").

Is there a way that DreamWeaver will automatically put alt="" in the image properties?

Thanks.

Re: Validation - adding alt property to images via CSS?

Probably by doing a "Find and Replace" but your alt attributes should be reflect the image.

If you just go and add alt="" to every image, then your document will validate but it will be far from accessible

No idea, sorry. I don't use DW.

But as Karinne said, the whole point of this is to make your image content accessible to people who can't see the image. Adding blank alts isn't much improvement.

...although at least it stops screen readers reading out the image filename.

This defeats the purpose of an an 'alt' tag. Automatically?
The whole purpose of this tag is to describe what is in the image for users who have chosen not to view images, or users who are using screen readers (e.g: Blind People).

Re: Validation - adding alt property to images via CSS?

I understand now.

Should the alt properties be formatted in any specific way?

Meaning, should it read....
  • Cat Picture
or
  • catpicture
Thanks again.
