I just tested it & no it does not work unfortunately if they have it turned off and I think you would still need to use some type of preload for the images. There are some other JS methods instead of the DW way that might be better as well.

Oh well never mind - thanks for trying that out. I'll stick with the using DW stuff for now as I can't be arsed complicating things any further.
Nearly bed-time...just a bit more coding to do...yawn yawn!  What a great birthday that was! Not!
