transfering my own pages to website using ftp

Hi,
Just making my last post sound right.
I have a website using 1&1 as my host. i can't find the right template on the websitebuilder they provide. I have been told i can use microsoft frontpage to create my own pages. I have had a play about with frontpage and am going to create a website using this. I don't know how to send this once created to my existing website. 1&1 said i have to type ftp://www. sitedetails and log into my ftp account. I did this and it came up with the items already on my site. I was then told to copy and paste my saved index.html into that section. That is where i am stuck as i can't understand how to do this properly.
And more info needed please tell me.

I use Frontpage to manage my files and it works great. I don't use the wysiwyg cause it's crap, but that applies to most website software, even the mighty dreamweaver.

I install Frontpage extensions and it makes my life 1000 times easier when FP knows what is and isn't up to date on the site.

FP actually has a lot to offer except to the stubborn. Just like any software including the mighty dreamweaver, it has it's issues that you have to deal with, but nothing mind blowing.

I think the main issue is price and anything sucks when you have to pay, but I doubt many on here have paid for their dreamweavers and it's so easily found.

Those who use notepad... LMAO!! that's just messed up. Too each his own, but no way in hell I'll give up all the benefits of FP because somebody thinks notepad works fine.

If you have FP, use it. Install your frontpage extensions and then tell FP where your hosted site is htt://..... and it will open the site folder side by side with your local drive and you just publish your site to the online version.

Too bad front page extensions do all but break the server completely, not to mention the security holes, breaking normal FTP access etc etc.

P.S. I can pull your pw protected directory password files with my browser and get your info. Yay Frontpage!

There are much better ways to manage files than with FP as well, i.e. a good document structure. Stop being lazy =)

As for editors there are plenty of decent free ones out there as there are free FTP clients such as Filezilla. There is no reason whatsoever to use front page under any circumstances. People who try to validate it by complaining about software costs etc are just lazy. Plenty of free and low cost solutions available. Honestly Dreamweaver is not worth the money imo. I personally use skEdit, CSSEdit, Transmit 3, and that is about all you need.

Need free/cheap alternatives just hit up sourceforge, versiontracker etc. Want everything for free? Ditch Windows and run Linux. =)

And fp extensions still royally jack up the server and privs. But hey if you want to botch your credibility and rely on substandard tools go with it. I personally would never hire or work with any one that uses front page and to this day strongly recommend to clients that they don't use it as well. In fact I often get jobs to fix the damage some front page jockey caused in the first place, so the more you use it the more work for me =). Then I get to move them to a nice sexy nix server without fp extensions installed and get rid of all of that crap.

Trying to validate the use of Front page is like trying to compare a Yugo to a Ferrari. Just keep in mind I have nothing against you or your abilities, just your choice of this particular tool.

To answer your question Totally New. Ftp is File Transfer Protocol. Once you have it up and can see the files on your web server, browse your PC to find the files you want to place on the server, select them and hit the upload button. Or most ftp programs let you drag and drop.

P.S. Oh how I love the WYSIWYG debate. I agree Frontpage sucks and I would never use it. But, to each their own.

mreine, your laghing at people that use notepad but yet notepad is probably the best way to lern and remember code by... i mean imnot exactly the best coder infact im probably the worst but alot of the people on here probably lern from notepad i no that how i made my first websites.... you use fp and your moanin about notepad lmfao u div notepad is 100 times better than fp "MATE"

I don't use the wysiwyg part of FP. Never touch the tab for design mode. Design mode is crap, just like Dreamweaver and any other wysiwyg program. I'm always in code view and it offers way more then what the ridiculous notepad does. If you honestly think notepad is 100 times better then FP... well... ahhh forget it.

I think you need to worry more about your grammar then coding. This may be a forum and yes most people say "F grammar, it's just a forum", but at some point, spelling even one word correctly, might add some credibility.

I used smartFTP based on hearing it's countless praises and then at some point it stopped working and demanded payment. Uninstalled, cleared what I could find in registry, reinstalled and nothing changed.

For the doubters.... Yes, it was the free version... yes.. yes it was.... yes.... it was.... yes.

coreftp.com made me want to cry. Lilac is fine but that was horrendous. The whole room I was sitting in went a different colour. Program looks alright though, I might try it.

Oh and I like SmartFTP is dead easy to use and I've never had any problems with it. The file manager in Dreamweaver is pretty good too but I can't be bothered loading it just for the file manager, SmartFTP is much, much quicker.

Definitely don't use FrontPage, not for anything. Delete it immediately. It's bad for creating sites, and has serious security issues as has already been mentioned. Bad frontpage!

SmartFTP has two versions mreine...one is free to use for non-commercial use, and the other you are supposed to pay for. Both versions are the same, that is the only difference...one of these days I will click okay to that box and buy the flipin program...till them I don't mind hitting Cancel.

I use the FireFTP extension for firefox when I need to use FTP.

Otherwise, I code all my pages directly on the server using DW ftp built-in function.
