Client using Geocities---Need advice on page links

I have a friend I'm building a site for and he wants to continue using his geocities account. Thing is, I'm a little unsure how I should set the links since he's using Geocities, and their web site doesn't help at all on this issue.

Do you guys know if I have to use absolute HTML for the internal links, or if I can use the standard /nameofpage.html for the internal links??

I know geocities members have an "ID" that is usually part of the page url, but is that something I have to add to the links I set for his pages, or can I use the /nameofpage.html style code?

Thanks.

You can use relative URLs anywhere you want... It is something that the browser works out itself and is not dependent on the hosting the pages are on.

So I can simply leave the links as.. /nameofpage.html and it should work? Great! I thought for sure Geocities would have some funky way to do the urls since their users site URLS have their ID in the string....

http://www.geocities.com/memberID/nameofpage.html and so forth.

I think their server probably adds those itself as it processes the page (along with inserting the ads they put in)

The member ID just acts like a folder, well all it is IS a folder. That folder seperates your account from other users' accounts. So it is no different than hosting a website off of a folder on your site. FE - www.yoursite.com/folder/test.htm

Since that folder and its contents are the only places that can be accessed by that person and the base URL is the directory (e.g. http:/ /www.geocities.com/username, "username" = directory name), you only need relative URLs such as '/images/foo.jpg' or 'foomain.html'.

Basically:
http:/ /www.geocities.com/username <- This is like having a domain name or a subdomain. Imagine that you would have http:/ /www.username.com and would use relative URLs. You can do the same using GeoCities.

Don't use big words Smokie. Thats not nice !

My History Teacher says that there are people in this world that could answer an Essay Question with just 1 word and get an A. While the rest of us have to use 2-5 pages to do the same thing. Smokie, I think your that person that only needs 1 word. lol.

Sorry it took me so long to give y'all a big thanks for the advice. For some reason I stopped getting email notifications regarding replies to this post. Knowing me, I opted out of that.

The problem was finally solved, and.. you guys were right of course.

Thanks again!
