Netscape/Mozilla - skinning those scrollbars!
You know in IE, you can set the scrollbar colours and acheive some neat effect... Is it possible to do those for netscape/mozilla users? I've never seen it being used so far though...

Nope, it's not part of the CSS standard...yet anyway.

You cannot do this at all in anything other than IE.... shame that.

This is true, but it doesn't stop me including it in almost every template I design. I certainly doesn't cause any compatability problems in browsers other than IE.

or opera. I understand that a lot of people like opera here! I am still sticking firmly to netscape/mozilla. Yep. Some people color your scrollbars till its very hard to scroll down! SOMETIMES, its done very neatly so it adds to the feel of your site. Yes, I believe CSS compliant browsers just ignores code it doesnt understand

or maybe it colors a "virtual" scrollbar that is underneath their scrollbar... WHOA.. I was thinking.. I know that this is scary, but its true. you COULD set the whole site inside of a Text Area and color that scrollbar.. hehe.

Except that would still, of course, only colour the scrollbar on IE...

There certainly isn't a standard way of doing it so you would have to find a method for each and every browser and I know Opera can't do it and Netscape *probably* doesn't. Let's not even mention Linux-based browsers such as Konqueror...
But to be honest, most users don't notice. I mean, who cares? The only time people notice is when they are affected negatively and that would mean making all the scrollbar css elements the same colour, making the scrollbar almost invisible? |

I as just reading of a way to make them completly transparent using CSS and an ie filter.... weird.

Actually, Konqueror does support coloured scrollbars. They look really good too! However, I don't understand how Konqueror can be as "fully W3C compliant" as they claim it to be if it supports an unsupported CSS function!

I think that most mostly compliant browsers all have their little quirks, and implementation of something that is unique to them (Even if caused by a bug)
Wouldn't it be just a little boring if all browsers were exactly the same.

Nope, it's not part of the CSS standard...yet anyway. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></blockquote id="quote"></font id="quote"> I don't believe it ever will be. As it modifies a part of the browser, and CSS shouldn't do that (it doesn't really, it's an IE only thing.) If you want to modify the browser badly, it should be done with javascript- and even then is strongly recommended against. I know W3C will never make it a standard... I can tell ya that one  |

Actually, the browser scroll bars are the only one in HTML, there's ones on textareas and on scrolling DIV containers which are both possibly even more appropriate times to color a scroll bar as they appear in the page content. So I for one hope it does make it into a standard.
