domains assigned for another country?

Hello all!

I apologize I didn't know where else to post this to, this seemed the most logical.

The site/sites I would like to get are currently only available in other domains such as .cc, .ca, co.nz etc...

My question is would it be professional for a United States web designer to have his site under another country domain ext. ?? (ccTLD's)?

.cc (Cocos (Keeling) Islands) is english

.co.uk or .me.uk (United Kingdom )

and ca (canada) is French and English

I would prefer to have .com ext, unfortunately the names im interested in are already taken by major corporations.

Alot of users on this forum seem to be from the UK, and other countries, so your input would be great also.

Your thoughts on this please, what do you think?

Re: domains assigned for another country?

TLD are assigned to countries for a reason, while you can go ahead and but whichever you want i wouldn't reccomend it.

Can you get a .us?

The domain name should tell people about your company, a .co.uk would tell me your uk based, a .com and i'd assumer your an international commercial firm. .org i'd assume your a non-profit organisation (we had this argument a few weeks ago about the .org).

But some times i feel it's ok to waver the rules, like the url del.icio.us because it's creative (although they probably are still US base, it was just an example)

But feel free to get creative with your name. [:
