Puzzled: Source vs. Preview Incongruity

I'm a novice at CSS and HTML.

I'm using Evrsoft First Page 2006 (free version) to create a single web page. Evrsoft has an upper and lower window one can use to view code (upper) and preview what the page should look like (below).

I've been able to create an external CSS file and reference it from Evrsoft. The page looks just the way I want it in the lower panel. However, when opening in a brower (Firefox 2.0.0.3), the tables and text revert to a single size. Not all formatting is lost (table and text remain centered, background of text cell remains green, etc.)

Evrsoft has a "Source" button (which shows the lower panel view which looks perfect) and a "Preview" button (which changes to a single panel which give a "browser-like" preview. That "Preview" option also loses most of the desired formatting when accessed.

I have no idea why the formatting effects disappear, especially since the "Source" preview panel looks absolutely perfect.

Comments (or clarification questions)?

It sounds like your code is not correct and the browsers are showing you what it really will look like. A free program isn't going to give you an accurate depiction. Ignore the preview pane and just start fixing it for the browsers. Forget the preview pane is there.

Re: Puzzled: Source vs. Preview Incongruity

I'm willing to do that. Though I am new to actually creating web material, I am very meticulous and have previously designed a complex program using an icon-based syntax. What I've typed in code based upon web-based tutorials that seem to comply. So I am still perplexed.

Nevertheless, I'll start from scratch. What program(s) would you recommend using for the PC? For the Mac? So far, I've used a PC, but I have access to a Mac too.

See the html editors thread Lchad created in the html forums or beginners' resources.

If you have dreamweaver, you can use that but stick to the code view.
