Get backlinks (sites that post a link to your site), search engines will find your link and index you

Re: How do I get my site on a search engine?
Also make sure you have well named page titles and good text content on your site that include the keywords you want to get results for.
Try not to be too spammy with your titles and content i.e. don't over-use your keywords beyond legible, well structured sentences or try to just cram them in.
Page titles are one of the most important aspect of your site - it's the biggest piece of text on a search engine result and it's the text that's clickable to your site i.e it gets attention!
So make sure each page has a unique title that reflects the content within it. An example:
- HTML: Select all
<title>Counseling Advice and Support | Mark Verkler - Christian Counseling</title>
This would be placed in the <head> of your HTML for your page that describes your services (or similar).
I'd recommend using at least one instance of Mark Verkler and christian counseling on every page, either in <title> or <body> (your page content)

First of all, the question is just asking how to get indexed, not optimize.
Secondly, "Mark Verkler" is not a keyword, so do not include it in every page.
Who would be thinking, "I need some christian counseling", I know I'll search for "Mark Verkler".

Re: How do I get my site on a search engine?
Put it this way - how professional is it when someone does search for you, and you're not even in the results!
I was speaking with a client the other day who told me how frustrating it is when he can't find company sites when he googles their name.
From reading articles, SEO tips and a book or two, it has been mentioned quite often that your business / venture or whatever may be the 'core' of your site, should be mentioned on every page, because it's relevant to every page.
EDIT: The poster did ask how to get results for his name, so I thought suggesting the above might be of use

Re: How do I get my site on a search engine?
It can be difficult to get the results you want. And unfortunately you don't, and never will, have complete control over how the search engines list you. There are a number of things you can do to boost your chances. Just google seo tips and you'll see the endless suggestions.
A solid start is to;
> Write standards-compliant HTML that is accessible, using header and paragraph tags when appropriate
> Write unique content, focusing on different keywords / keyphrases for each page of your site, accompanied by a unique page title that also includes one or two keywords. Try to be specific with your keywords - the more specific, the less the competition. Include things such as the location area or another detail that separates you from others.
> Use keywords in anchor text and titles (anchor text is the clickable part of a hyperlink) e.g.
- HTML: Select all
<a href="link" title="Christian Counselling">Christian Counselling</a> and not
- HTML: Select all
Learn more Christian Counselling by clicking <a href="link">here</a>
> Try to 'market' your site - get inbound links. Search for sites similar to yours and see if they are willing to exchange links. Look for relevant directories where you can get your site listed. Build up some 'hype' - start a blog, post an article to a relevant site, get friends and relatives to tell others about the site etc.

Re: How do I get my site on a search engine?
I could provide you with the tips for the big three SE's i.e,Google,Yahoo,Msn.
1)First, make sure that your web site mentions the phrases you would reasonably expect an interested party to search for, as regular text in your HTML, not as a picture of text.
2) Second, make sure that the major search engines know about your site. As of this writing, Google is by far the most important. You can add your site to Google using their Add URL page.
a)For Google:Submitting your site to Google is not recommended at all and considered a flaw in SEO because this way you are actually telling Google yourself that your site is "new" on the internet.
Remember, Google is not just another search engine. Instead it's based on a lot more complex and "logical" algorithm.
3) Ask the webmasters of related web pages and sites to link to your pages, and encourage your readers to link to your site. This will bring people in directly, and it will also allow search engines like Google,Yhoo or Msn to find you.
And the most important thing.....your link isn't working....

That's something absolutely new, does it concern DMOZ as well?

Re: How do I get my site on a search engine?
Bah humbug. There's no disadvantage to submitting your site to Google, except that it should be unnecessary.
This is one of those daft SEO myths that gets sillier in the retelling.

Re: How do I get my site on a search engine?
Mike, I would of thought it would be better I think for Google to find your site through a link as it could index it and take into account that you have that inbound link.

It makes no difference. Think through it logically!
If you have an inbound link, Google will find it, regardless of whether you've submitted your pages. Submitting your pages does not cause Google to stop taking account of inbound links. Google's indexing of your site will be adjusted with every new bit of information it finds.
Yet there's little reason to submit your site. Unless you've messed up really badly, Google should have no trouble finding it. Similarly, submitting a sitemap is a waste of time, unless you have bad SEO to start with (that is, if you don't provide good internal links for Google to follow).

Re: How do I get my site on a search engine?
If submitting your site manually to Google were a bad thing, why would they have that function on their site? They are not in the business of being SE tricksters. They are honestly looking for good sites.
I think this is false as well. I always submit client sites and have not had any problems at all.

Re: How do I get my site on a search engine?
well, you should go for search engine submission and follow all off-page approaches like directory submission, get one article with the link pointing to your site and you can easily get your site in search engine result pages.......
