I didn't develop any preferences but I learned SEo myself. If you try to see SEO in a simple form, it simply using common sense to manipulate words(and links,etc) to make yourself more relevant to your topic.

SEO is a constantly evolving process, as such you can't just sit down and learn it from someone and forget about it. You may start off as someone who has been taught the basics of SEO, but as it progresses you need to learn the new techniques for yourself, and as such become a self taught expert.

I feel it is better to be self-taught in SEO then to be taught SEO.The reason being it is always profitable to be taught from experiences rather then witnesses.
