[SOLVED] Help please! Headache.

Ok, so ive no idea how this works AT ALL - apart from the meta tags & after trying to read through the forums about it ive got a headache. (A Sticky on this would be great!)

I need to get my site high on the list of Google when people search for terms like Florida, Villa, Holiday, Orlando, Rent etc

Ive put the meta tags in, my domain name is www.thebestfloridavillas.com

Now what? This is so confusing what with 'spiders' and so on, wow.

any help would greatly be appreciated!!

Sorry to ask the most asked question in SEO!

Thanks

~Dean

Re: Help please! Headache.

...400mg Ibuprofen, three times daily with meals.

<meta> keywords are thought nowadays to have little or no bearing on search engine indexing, because they have been so thoroughly abused by authors.

I suspect you're in for a difficult struggle, because those sound like competitive keywords to rank for. If you can be more specific to your area/niche, then you have better chances. Check out your keywords in a Google search: how many results do they return? This gives you a (very) crude estimate of the challenge you face.

There's no easy way to rank well for competitive keywords, I'm afraid.

Re: Help please! Headache.

Results 1 - 10 of about 323,000 for The Best Florida Villas. (0.17 seconds)

Sh*t.

Re: Help please! Headache.

323,000 isn't that bad. It's achievable.

Here's my rough estimation of difficulty versus number of search results. This is based on little experience, so take it with a pinch of salt:
  • 1000 results -- easy, but completely obscure
  • 10,000 results -- should be easy, but still obscure
  • 100,000 results -- you need something pretty good
  • 1000,000 results -- hard, but worth it if you can
  • 10,000,000 results -- you'd better be damn good. You stand to make good money from this
  • 100,000,000 results -- you're dreaming
  • 1,000,000,000 results -- I will bow down and worship you
Of course, the number of results is only a very crude indication of the competition for your keywords.

Bizarrely, the competition is lower for "florida villas". This is great news for you, because it suggests you have a decent chance of ranking well.

Make sure your keywords actually appear in your content. Try to provide some content that people actually want -- perhaps some free advice, or a travel guide, or whatever. You need inbound links from relevant sites.

Ultimately, it's about creating a site and promoting it, just like any other product.

Also make sure your keywords appear in important page elements such as headings (<h1>, <h2>).

Check out your competitors. What do they do well? What do they do badly? How can you do better?

Re: Help please! Headache.

Meta tags are though to have little bearing on SEO as Mike mentioned.

A relevant domain name helps, (this you have got).

Good clean code is also very important. Search engines send out spiders searching for you site, and the more readable your code, the more impact this is going to have on your listings.

Some people think that getting links from other high visited sites also improves your listings, so getting in touch with various holiday websites or holiday searches?

Is this your site or your clients?

Re: Help please! Headache.

The website is myne.

Thanks for the replys!

I will add some <h1> titles.

Also, if i add the keywords ive used into my index.html in a <p></p> but make the text the same colour as my BG (So you dont see it) and make it really small (so its harder to select) will my rank improve? Im sure ive seen that done before.

Regards,

~Dean

Re: Help please! Headache.

Just though of a useful tip that you may or may not know.

search Florida villas in google, and visit the top 6 sites, (NOT THE SPONSORED RESULTS). View their home pages and source code, look at their keywords, how many times the have the word Florida and villa in their code ect.

hope this helps

Tsk tsk tsk It's down to you, but that's considered a black hat SEO technique. Just try your best to write good, quality content that has a good mix of keywords whilst maintaining readability and usefulness to your readers.

That's Bad! Google will ignore your site if you use these kind of techniques for keyword.

See the link aso186 has provided you with.

Re: Help please! Headache.

Yeh i agree with these two, bad practice doing this, people will see your site and think that not only are you unprofessional, you are not good enough to design a site with good seo without using black hat.

Stick to what aso186 says

pinesandneedles.com is 11th for "christmas trees" with 4,800,000 results.
Where does that leave me?

That's a great result.

Before your head inflates too much, however, remember:
  • The number of results is only a crude guide. It doesn't directly correspond to competitiveness.
  • I pulled those figures out my arse.

2. For the benefit of this conversation, let's assume you have a very clever arse...
