I don't have a clue what keywords to focus on seeing as I just babble on about anything.
Any advice?

You can't optimise if you don't know what the subject matter of your website is.

Either give up on SEO, or choose a subject and stick with it.

Okay, just need to think what I like writing about most then!

Alternatively, you could blog on multiple topics, and try to optimise separately for each. But the most effective SEO is likely to involve one core subject.

Well I have two main topics: web design/development which i can optimise,
and then just chuck in my random ones and try to optimise them the best i can.
Sound good?

To get keywords across, i put them in <em> and <strong> tags right?

Title Tags for the Win

Every page in your site should have a title with the site name and a short description of the page. About 60 letters total. Include a keyword. Remember that the page title is what appears in search results, it should give users a clear reason to click on it.
Your navigation links should have title attributes that match the titles of your pages. This looks like <a title=”name of page” href=”link”>. It’s a small thing, but it will give you a significant SEO improvement.

I am not clear with the subject other wise would defiantly helped you.

Okay you just need to concentrate first to the keywords that you will use. Then if you're done, you can now use those keywords on your title and description

There are many tools in World Wide Web to optimize your content. You can get free software or trial version software. Some software can advise you to do something to focus your keyword on your page. I ever used WEDCEO for free version. This software is quiet great for me.

If it helps, I have (very loosely) optimised my blog to whatever phrases I want my main website to rank for. Then, because I post about so many completely different and unrelated 'random' subjects, I optimize each post individually for one phrase I think people are likely to search for. You can probably tell by looking at the titles of my posts:
SP3 breaks Wireless Connection Manager in IBM Thinkpads (Lenovo)
Kitchens Direct Cold Calling
Ajax/XML problem with British Pound sign
Like I said, 'random' subjects! Which when you think about it, is what most blogs are like.

It's not sexy, but it works:
#1 - Google search for sp3 breaks wireless
#3 - Google search for kitchens direct cold calling (after my webforumz post since webforumz has more authority)
#1 and 2 - Google search for ajax pound sign

My point is. A blog, unlike a company website or portofolio, does not need to be associated with a correrent theme in order to rank well. Just do your SEO post by post as you go along...

YES. Ideally, use both <em> and <strong>, each at least 1 time, no more than 3 times within the body of the page. Also make sure to include the word in the first and last paragraph of the content body. This helps set the 'theme' for the content.
