The <h1> tag is used to define a heading.
There should only be one on your page and it should as close the <body> tag as possible.
It should also contain your keywords for your site e.g. car sales.

That's not necessarily true.

Personally, I prefer to use <h1> as the heading for the whole page, and I match it to the <title>. But there's nothing wrong with using two <h1>s, provided your page structure still makes sense.

Closeness to the <body> tag is not important, although an early position in the page content may cause search engines to give the <h1> added weighting.

I agree with Alex to be honest, but there are so many ways to improve search engines results i ma bedazzled will we ever find the unique way???


I have never seen in al my time on this forum a donkey smiley (So thought i should entertain myself)

can any one give a example of <h1> tag.
because i really dont know how <h1> is suppose to look like and the format.
