Header tags and google indexing q's
Hi, as this is the first site I've tried to do, i decided to use a WYSIWYG style editor. I have a few questions in regards to the code it output, and how google will decide pagerank:
I've read that keywords should be placed in header tags ie. <h1> etc, this program outputs all text in pixel size, will this adversly effect the rating? I've seen sites that have an intro page similar to this, with barely any code, that seem to rank quite well in google. Firstly, how do they achieve this, and secondly is this entirely the wrong approach to getting a decent ranking? (having a title page link to both a flash site and an html version) I'd prefer to have the index.html page rank higher than the rest. Also read somewhere that the googlebot dosen't like reading between div tags, and wont read javascript.. is this the case? Any assistance or general comments on improvement gratefully accepted! Thanks, Nate. www.tcnls.com |

Re: Header tags and google indexing q's
PageRank has nothing to do with content or site structure, it's only a measure of how many sites are linking to you.
Age, inbound links, content and structure all play roles in rankings. Age and inbound links seem to be the most important in my experience, content next and structure last. I have a site with absolutely no content on it, but it has a PR of 5 because it used to be popular and sites are still linking to it. Keywords are good in the h1 tag, but styling will not matter. Title tags are more important. No, Google does not like Flash or splash pages very much in my experience. My suggestion would be to create an index home page with a link to a Flash version while still leaving all the content on that index page. I have no knowledge about Google and <div>'s, but it seems unlikely that they would affect rankings that much. Google does not read JavaScript yet. I'm not an expert by any means, but for my main site being less than a year old, I've been getting outstanding rankings by watching closely and learning from experience. |

Re: Header tags and google indexing q's
It's great to educate yourself on what the search engines want, however the most important factor is building sites for people. If you can't get people to visit or stay, then you have an issue.

Naturally I agree, but having the best of both sides is better

Re: Header tags SEO
Spiders skip javascript for sure. So, don't embed any important links inside javascript. Heading tags like H1 or H2 are important, but title tag is far more important. Be careful what you put in the title tags. Don't put meaningless words like Home Page, Welcome, etc.

Re: Header tags and google indexing q's
As far as I know, SE spiders don't read JS, but that should be the least of your worries. Five percent of internet users surf without JS enabled. Make your site work with everyone, and you won't have to worry about crawlers.
