To be fair, there isn't much you can do.

Google now reads text and links in Flash files, so if anything, try to put useful content as near towards the beginning of your SWF as possible. This is still a little risky as only google will currently read flash files.

The best way of course it to have a HTML alternative to the Flash site with the same content!

The only sure fire way of getting a good position is to either:- Have a hell of a lot of quality links to your website or make an HTML version of it.

Most flash sites have an HTML version for this very reason amongst other things.

You got it....

Dont use a splash page though... they are also bad for SEO.

Instead, use a little bit of Javascript detection to check for Flash plugin and redirect to the flash version.

I've actually seen sites that use their non-flash index page as thier main page and a flash version button; which I prefer. That way there is no flash page, non-JS errors, and it looks great. Just my 1 cent.

It's actually the Home Page of the HTML version. They usually have a Flash Version button somewhere in the header where you can switch to that version. I like this because it puts your user directly on the site and there isn't a splash page.

Re: SEO for Flash sites ....

Yeah, creating an HTML version is one of the solutions. Just update your robot.txt in order that SE cannot access the flash site, SE do not like duplicate content.

My two cents worth...

Re: SEO for Flash sites ....

Ok I love flash too and Adobe and Macromedia or is it now just Adobe have been working hard on making flash content accessible and able to work for search. But the main problem with flash sites is there is only one point of access.
Both ajax and flash programmers face the challenge of creating search engine friendly sites that are accessible and work with search.
Sorry no clear answer here its a very good question and something I am working with myself.

Re: SEO for Flash sites ....

This is one of the reasons I don't like working with flash, it's better than it has been in the past but it's not the most accessible of formats. For people or robots. It's a shame really too.

So yeah flash and html and I'd probably detect settings just cos it's a bit slicker but you could always just have a link in the header of the html index page like someone suggested above. I do try to stay away from flash though, and it's not just because I'm a bit rubbish.

Pete.
