Does Google still care about DMOZ
Firstly, let me say that I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right spot, but I didn't see a search engine/SEO section...
I posted this at another forum recently & I want to post it here to see if I get any different answers. I'm curious if Google still finds DMOZ so important after the technical problems DMOZ has been having of late. An editor on another forum told me that Google hasn't taken results from DMOZ in the past 9 months. I'm not really surprised seeing that DMOZ was showing an archived version of the listings for quite a few months...but has Google given up on them completely, or do you think Google is just waiting for them to sort out their problems? |

Google Webmaster Guidelines:
http://www.google.com/support/webmas...y?answer=35769 Even if DMOZ lost its almighty position with Google, it is still a very important directory if not the most important out there. Google directory is, virtually, DMOZ: http://directory.google.com/ Even if Google decides to abandon DMOZ, it will always be a very important backlink in any webmaster's SEO utility belt...

Apply again...
and make sure you pick a category that is suitable or they'll reject your application and it will delayed again.

Re: Does Google still care about DMOZ
Okay. On their site it says not to apply twice, but what are they going to do? Spank me?
Alas, there's a "Service Temporarily Unavailable" notice up when I try to submit my site. I'll keep an eye out for it to change. Thanks, spinal. |

Re: Does Google still care about DMOZ
I don't think you'll be spanked Ryan! hahahahah Since you're not listed now, what do you have to lose? Live dangerously... hahaha
This is a good test to see if Google is really relying on DMOZ. I've just submitted three new sites this past week to Google. Obviously I'm unable to submit to DMOZ so we'll see how long it takes to get listed in Google or if those sites get listed at all! |

Re: Does Google still care about DMOZ
I think I got declined from Dmoz in the first place because my site wasn't entirely finished. While every aspect of it isn't working yet now, I still think it's far more worthy than half the sites listed there already. Even though all the information is available, my site's always under constructions

Re: Does Google still care about DMOZ
A bit off topic, but anyway...
I think every website should always be under construction. PCs, DVDs, TVs, MP3 players and iPods all become out-dated very soon. Like-wise, a website should always be updated and tweaked to keep the interest alive.

Re: Does Google still care about DMOZ
Yeah, I agree. I'm always tinkering with the design and adding new features. I'm just really bad about starting something that's visible to the public and then not finishing it for a week or two. Like my archive page. I've been slowly working on it for about a month... Oh well. My site has been a work in progress for almost a year now.

Re: Does Google still care about DMOZ
Unfortunatly.. DMOZ submissions are all approved by hand... by volunteers ... this means that if you submit to a category that isnt exactly right, you end up being ping ponged around for 12 months untill you finally end up in the right place..... It is vitally important you apply for the right category, saves literally months of waiting in my experiance

Re: Does Google still care about DMOZ
Well, I never even got accepted. The bottom of the list would be an improvement...

Re: Does Google still care about DMOZ
Problem is that everyone at DMOZ is a volunteer... and there basically lazy... if you dont submit to the right category, then they dont really do anything to help ..... I had to submit my first site 3 times before i got in.
Dont worry about multiple submissions, if your first was incorrect, then a second in the correct category will still be faster, even if starting from the bottom of that list.... plus, some categories are busier than others, and some are very very short on staff. |
