Learning PHP

Id like to learn to use PHP. I already work with Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I know Databases enough and probably will learn more when working with PHP because it mostly works together right? I hate reading.. class courses are fine but no books.. It'd be like PHP for dummies or something. I have an Associates in Web Design/E-Commerce yes Im suppose to know it but unfortunately to the lack of educational skills some of the computer teachers had we didnt learn PHP for full knowledge. is there any course online free or inexpensive paid, completely through online I can go through or where should I start to teach myself. Im better at looking at code and step by step processes.. Any help would be appreciated.. Thanks

Re: Learning PHP

I would suggest if you already know the basics, that you just pull apart some other apps and see how they work and learn that way.

Otherwise, you can check out linda.com for their php instructor led classes - although they're not free (unless of course you look elsewhere for them - no hints though).

Re: Learning PHP

I have always liked this site and find it very handy for looking up functions: http://uk.php.net/manual/en/index.php

The online manual is fabulous as a reference ... but it doesn't provide much on technique and how to make great use of PHP. Rather like trying to learn Romanian from an English to Romanian dictionary ... great for working out how to ask for haddock once you've done the fundamentals.
Now ... having given that warning about the superb reference manual, I should suggest alternative. Really a bit of a problem in PHP as it's best learnt from practise / experimentation / mentoring rather than from a book or web site (it's one of "those" subjects, I'm afraid). And I don't know any mentors / classes I can point you at on the West Coast or in Hawaii ... unless you happen to be ski-ing at Tahoe over the new year in which case I'll meet you in the bar one evening!

Re: Learning PHP

Thanks.. I also wanted to know I was looking to take a class or certification in PHP I did google it and looked at a few sites, but its either way too expensive or I dont understand exactly what they offer.. does anyone know of a PHP Training course or Certification program? Ill check those websites thanks very much..

BTW - I learn like.. just plunging into it not through books.. did I mention that already.. I was thinking, Im looking at the PHP Manual, I looked at this one last night.. Should I just install what is says to and just plunge right in or? I like to build webpages with frames but the issues with framed pages and search engines clash and a friend was telling me to build the site with PHP.. I dont know what Im trying to say but.. what should I do?

Re: Learning PHP

Decide what you want from a site, then plan how you will build it. If you need to know wether PHP can do it or not, google it!!
It realy depends how you want your site built, what you want it to do and how. There are a million and one ways with PHP.

Re: Learning PHP

It comes with installation instructions. Unpack the file and find the installation instructions, then follow them.

Re: Learning PHP

What exactly are you looking to do? Install php on a server? If you already have hosting then it most likely has php installed already.

Are you installing on your local machine? Are you stuck at some point? What have you done so far? Why don't you think it's working?

We can't help you if you don't give us enough info???
