CakePHP

I'd be grateful for any basic information about CakePHP (or any other open source PHP framework). I know nothing about frameworks, but I'm starting to have difficulties maintaining tangled code. I really don't want to take a lot of time to do my own OOP if I'm going to end up using a premade framework.

Assuming you are a very-little guy and rent shared server space on a commercial host server, do you have to find a host that has it installed and available, or is it theoretically possible to install it as a customer (with their permission of course) inside an account?

Does anyone use Zend? Is it affordable?

Again, this is a total noobie issue for me. Any basic information or advice would be appreciated.

This is really funny 'cause I was looking into CakePHP a few days ago.

I often visit Snooks' blog and he's got his running with Cake.

I assume you also when to CakePHP.org and checked out CakeForge?

I'm kind of where you're at too ... with all the noobie questions So ... anything you find, I'd be grateful if you could post 'em here I'll do the same.

AAAARRGGHHH! ( I just wrote a huge post and it didn't send! )

Anyway, the jist of it was...

I've been using cakephp for 6 months at work and it's great, very flexible although it can be a bit of a nightmare when starting out as the documentation can be ambiguous...

You can just have it as a folder in your hosting account, there is a little bit of setup that can be confusing at first. You shouldn't need anything other than PHP4 or 5 and MySQL.

Haven't tried the ZEND framework as it's not yet at a stable release...
Although, if it's anything like the ZEND app, I imagine it would be good.

If you do decide to go with cake, I'm happy to help you out.

Overall I'd recommend it, it has sped up development for me so much and a lot of the code is reusable after some tweeking.

I did a bit of modularization on my own and I'm off the framework jag for a bit. I'll post if I try one. Thanks for the responses.
