File structures/databases...

Hello. I am somewhat new in PHP & MySQL scripting, and I've got a quite big project in my hands. My objective is to build a dymanic site that higly relies on downloads, but it's the first time I'm doing a completely original file download system.

First off, I would like to know if using a simple upload form to send the file to a free-access folder, combined with an entry in a database would be okay. Are there security flaws in this? if the files are going to be large (~50Mb), is it going to work properly?

Also, I would like to be able to do a backup of the data; that is, to get all the files but also their download information such as description, name, author... this might be more related to databases, but I would like to know if there's a solid method of putting the files and the database together.

Many thanks to anyone who can help me out with this.
