how to delete an insane number of files

Long story short, I was running my crawler for about three days whith out checking it and it went completely haywire. Insted of writing one file every 12 hours with a report it looks like it wrote a file every millisecond. So right now the root of my web directory has some insane amout of files in it. Amazingly my server did not crash(thanks to Gentoo) but every time I try to delete the files with winSCP nothing happens and Putty starts to delete files but crashes after about 5 min. Any help would be appreciated...

I would suggest using screen and running rm within that although you should probably also pipe it through nice as well. There are plenty of screen tutorials out there, and you can logout and just let it run I guess. That's how I've always managed such things myself, and yeah using WinSCP for such a large amount would be very bad for it hehe.
