Hi.
I really had no idea where to post this question. But I wanted some opinions. I'm currently going to school for web design which is only a diploma program. I can't further it. I'll be graduating in 2 months. Can I get anywhere in this field with just having a diploma and no other degree in anything else? It's been a concern of mine for a while. Thanks, Liz |

Re: question about web design
You can get wherever you want to go.
Having a diploma in web design is great, as is shows to potential clients / employers that you take this seriously and that you have a met a minimum accredited standard. That says a lot in itself. Clients will also be interested in seeing your work, and to what standard you design to, so start getting a portfolio together. The main issue that designers have out there at the mo is that no-one seems to know what a minimum standard is or what it should look like. So examples of your work is a must. Good luck, and I'm sure you'll be fine. Stew

Re: question about web design
HTML and CSS should be your best friends ... and Semantics should complete the threesome
Know the ins and outs of CSS. Build your portfolio |

Re: question about web design
Portfolio is the key. Knowing tableless design now is important, but you will still need to know standard html as many large companies still use that.
If you brain can understand any programing languages (mine can't) learn Ajax, PHP and Flash action scripting. Very much in demand - and more money to be made. Larger companies nowadays want a BA - more of a CYA than anything else |

Re: question about web design
Check out sites like http://alistapart.com and CSS ZenGarden for great tips and ideas. Also, think about this: Do you want to work for someone else to start with, or go freelance right away? Do you want to focus on web sites for businesses? Non-profits? Wineries? Religious organizations?
I also suggest see what other people are doing - do google searches in your area, talk to your teachers, and of course this forum! |
