loading pages up with ftp and the index.html page

I didn't know if this was the right place for this question but thought someone might be able to help me!

I've done a site and managed to upload it with ftp but now it's just doing that "index of" thing when i type in the web address, I'm guessing because I haven't defined an 'index' page.

The problem is that I don't want my home page to say "index" at the top, in the blue bar at the very top of the window. I want it to say something else, like 'home', or 'hello'.

So how do I tell the ftp which page is the index page it needs, without calling it 'index.html'?

Again, sorry if this isn't the right place but I hope someone has a solution! Small, simple words in any replies please... I really am a beginner

Re: loading pages up with ftp and the index.html page

To change the default page that is displayed when going to a domain is a configuration option of the server.

I don't think many hosts allow you to alter this.

When you say "the blue bar" do you mean the Title?

If you do, then altering the <title> element in your HTML file will fix that.

eg.

<html>
<head>
<!-- Probably some meta tags etc //-->
<title>Home or Hello</title>
</head>
<body>
ect.....

If you're not into the idea of actually looking at the HTML your HTML editor should allow you to change it with little fuss.

Cheers

Like Rakuli said above, you need to change the server's configuration for that to happen. Most servers have default pages set to index.html (or .php, .htm) or default.html (or .php, .htm)

If you do not want to show the directory listing, that is also a server configuration.

Check with your host and ask them to change it. Don't be surprised if they say no tho

Yeah I mean the title bar! And I don't know html, I did the pages in image ready. Is there any other way to make the title bar not say index?!

In between the <head></head>
put <title>Hello</title>

You will have to look inside the code of the site to find this area.

I think it's worth mentioning,
if you have an index page (e.g. index.html)
that will be at:
yoursite.com/index.html
do not make link to that page,
instead make them to:
yoursite.com/
you'll regret it later if you don't
